Centre for Information Technology and Development (CITAD) CITAD is a non-profit organization in Nigeria. Now it incorporates six different thematic units.

Its mission is to empower citizens for a just and knowledge-based society that is anchored on sustainable and balanced development using ICT, capacity-building development, advocacy, research and partnership. CITAD is a non-governmental and non-profit organization that is committed to the use of information and communication technologies for development and promotion of good governance. It was est

ablished first as a single project (Computer Literacy Project) in 1996 but was expanded in 2000 to include other projects. CITAD sees technology as tool to promote sustainable development, good government and peaceful coexistence. It uses ICT to empower youth and women through access to information, skills and online mentoring opportunities. It utilises such platforms such as social networking, web-to-text interface and tools such as Google alert to provide information that would promote peaceful coexistence. It uses Google alerts to source information about trends of discussion in various platforms, sites and online discussion lists and sites with a view to understanding treads, attitudes and positions such that it can develop appropriate responses to those that are similarly disseminated to either reinforce positive trends or counter and neutralize negative ones. It has two other offices located in Dutse (Jiagawa State) and Bauchi (Azare) as well as three outreach units located in Gombe , Yobe and Bauchi States. The organization has a broad of Trustees consisting of four people, a Governing Board of 8 people that is responsible for policy making including approval of annual budget as well as recruitment of senior staff. A management team headed by the Executive Director implements the programmes of the organization as well as provides management and administrative functions. It has 14 full time staff, 8 part time and over 30 volunteers spread across the three offices of the organization.

Centre for Information Technology and Development (CITAD)and ActionAid Nigeria engaged the Universal Basic Education Board (UBEB) Chairperson Mrs Florence Dawon Wenegieme to push for urgent construction of classrooms in Gwalada, AMAC.

The visit led by CITAD Board Chair Prof. Amina Kaidal and ActionAid Local Rights Programme Advisor Hajara Adamu to the board, presented findings on educational gaps and the urgent need for improved infrastructure in Gwalada community, Abuja Municipal Area Council.

Discussions focused on:
1. Improving access to quality basic education for children in underserved areas
2. Strengthening collaboration between government, CSOs, and communities

The visit is part of ongoing efforts to ensure every child in the FCT has access to safe and functional learning environments.

An advocacy visit to Universal Basic Education Board (UBEB) Chairperson Mrs Florence Dawon Wenegieme on educational gaps and the need for construction of classrooms in Gwalada community, Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC). The visit led by Centre for Information Technology and Development (CITAD) Board Chair Prof. Amina Kaidal and ActionAid Nigeria Local Rights Programme Advisor Hajara Adamu.

The team presented findings on educational gaps and discussions focused on:
1. Addressing lack of classroom and learning material.
2. Improving access to quality basic education for children in underserved areas

Arch. Mansur Sule, representative of the Ona of Abaji and overall traditional ruler in the FCT, spoke on the historical and cultural significance of ancestral lands at today’s validation workshop.

He highlighted how generations of indigenous communities have lived, farmed, and upheld traditions on these lands, and why protecting them is central to preserving identity and heritage in the FCT.

The session added critical context to the research findings on land grabbing and inadequate compensation.

At the validation workshop on land grabbing in the FCT, Barr. Hussaini Hussaini of the Eastward Legal Services presented on the legal standing of land grabbing and the rights of affected communities.

His session broke down the gaps in existing laws, the weaknesses in compensation processes, and what legal recourse is available to indigenous people under Nigerian land laws.

The insights reinforced the need for stronger legal protections and accountability mechanisms to safeguard ancestral lands in the FCT.

Research findings now on the table, Ibrahim Sulaiman Jama’are presented the key findings from CITAD’s research on land grabbing in selected FCT communities under the Local Rights Programme.
The presentation highlighted:
- Patterns of land loss among indigenous communities
- The impact of improper and delayed compensation on livelihoods
- Gaps in documentation and legal protection of ancestral lands
Stakeholders are now reviewing the evidence to validate the findings and agree on recommendations for fairer land governance in the FCT.

The study, carried out in selected FCT communities under the Local Rights Programme with support from ActionAid Nigeria, captures the realities of indigenous communities facing displacement

Key challenges surfaced:
- Loss of ancestral farmland with little or no consultation
- Improper compensation, delayed, undervalued, or unpaid
- Weak land documentation that leaves communities exposed

The workshop brought together community voices, civil society, and stakeholders together to validate findings and push for fairer land governance in the FCT.
