Something big happened on 8 August. And if you missed it, we kept it for you. 💛

We brought Nigerian women together from across the country. Different states, different ages, different starting points. But one shared feeling underneath all of it: the sense that the digital world was built for someone else.

Three speakers walked into that room and challenged that feeling directly.

Goodness Okpara told them to stop saying "just a creative person." Because creativity is a digital skill. And the tech industry needs people who think the way they think.

Patience Bawa showed them that you do not need to write code to build a career in technology. She got in through communication, through empathy, through showing up and learning. And she has never looked back.

Amb. Faruk Alkali told them the most practical thing anyone said all day. Find what you are genuinely good at first. Then find the digital path that fits it. Because the right skill in the wrong direction goes nowhere.

And Hadiza Yahaya Abubakar held the whole conversation together the way only a broadcaster with five years of telling Nigeria's stories can.

We are recruiting volunteer tutors for the WIMROF Digital Skills Accelerator — a free 4-week online training programme for Nigerian women who have phones and laptops but zero digital skills training.

There is something nobody tells you when the conversation about digital skills begins.

Because one of the reasons women who enter the digital space do not stay is that they were pushed toward a skill that was never theirs to begin with. They followed a trend, a suggestion, a programme that was available — not a path that was right for them.

Digital skills are not one thing. They are many things.

Design. Communication. Marketing. Coding. Cybersecurity. Data. Finance. Content creation.

One of them is yours. The first step is not to learn everything. The first step is to know yourself well enough to know which door to walk through.

That is not a small thing. That is everything.

In 2026, the average Nigerian woman has a phone.

She also has years of being told — not always loudly, but consistently — that certain doors are not for her. That certain industries, certain careers, certain opportunities belong to someone else.

That is what systematic disadvantage looks like. Not always a locked gate. Sometimes just a story, repeated long enough, that she begins to believe.

At Breaking Barriers 2026, Patience Bawa — Fintech Professional — named it directly.

"You know, sometimes society makes it look like, you know, the average African woman sits in the seat of systematic disadvantage. It just looks like something is standing as a barrier, and I wanted to break that. I personally wanted to break that."

She did not wait for the system to change before she moved. She moved — and in moving, she became proof that the barrier, though real, is not permanent.

That is the message Breaking Barriers 2026 was built on.

The phone is in your hand. The ability has always been there. What changes today is the story you tell yourself about what you are allowed to do with both.

Across Nigeria and beyond, real work has been done to bring women into the digital space. Programmes have been built. Conversations have been had. Progress has been made.

And yet — in 2026, millions of Nigerian women still hold a phone every day and have never been shown what it can do beyond calls and WhatsApp.

At Breaking Barriers 2026, Goodness Okpara — Brand Designer and UI/UX Designer — put her finger on one of the reasons why.

"If you are here and you are thinking, I'm just a creative person, I want you to remove that word — just. Because you're not just a creative person. You're creative. And creativity is valuable in technology."

The barrier is not always access. It is not always the absence of a device.

Sometimes the barrier is a word. A single word — just — that a woman has been repeating to herself for years without anyone stopping to tell her it was never true.

Creative women are not on the edges of the technology industry because they lack ability. They are on the edges because the narrative of who belongs in tech has never fully included them.

That is the gap that remains. And that is the gap WIMROF is here to close.
