The Every Pregnancy Project, in partnership with the Africa Centre for Excellence in Population Health and Policy (ACEPHAP), has organised a faith-based stakeholder engagement aimed at strengthening collaboration between religious leaders, health experts and development partners to reduce preventable maternal deaths in Nigeria, starting with Kano State.

Speaking during the engagement, Chief Executive Officer of the Every Pregnancy Project, Isra Chaker, described the initiative as a global, partner-driven coalition focused on ending preventable maternal and newborn deaths and improving long-term outcomes for families.

She said Every Pregnancy operates as “a movement without borders,” working in areas affected by humanitarian crises, conflict and climate change, where mothers and babies face the greatest risks and weakest access to care.

According to her, the project supports frontline implementers, strengthens referral systems, promotes life-saving maternal interventions, and mobilises financial and community resources through partnerships with governments, faith institutions and local organisations.

Chaker explained that Nigeria remains a priority country for the project due to its high maternal mortality rate, with Kano State identified as a critical starting point because of both the scale of need and the presence of strong local partners and faith leaders willing to drive change.

She noted that faith leaders — especially Muslim scholars — play a central role in shaping community attitudes and behaviour, making them key partners in advocacy, awareness and resource mobilisation for maternal health.

The Every Pregnancy Project works across multiple countries through faith-inspired and community-based organisations. These include Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Egypt, Gaza, Iraq, Kenya, Lebanon, Malawi, Mali, Morocco, Nigeria, Pakistan, Palestine, Somalia, Sudan, Tanzania, Türkiye, the United States and Yemen.

Participants at the Kano engagement stressed that combining faith leadership, technical health expertise and sustainable funding models — including waqf and community contributions — could significantly accelerate progress toward reducing preventable maternal deaths.

{ ٱلَّذِينَ يُنفِقُونَ أَمۡوَٰلَهُم بِٱلَّيۡلِ وَٱلنَّهَارِ سِرّٗا وَعَلَانِيَةٗ فَلَهُمۡ أَجۡرُهُمۡ عِندَ رَبِّهِمۡ وَلَا خَوۡفٌ عَلَيۡهِمۡ وَلَا هُمۡ يَحۡزَنُونَ }
[Surah Al-Baqarah: 274]

Those who spend their wealth in charity day and night, secretly and openly—their reward is with their Lord, and there will be no fear for them, nor will they grieve.

Even a small amount could go a long way in saving a mother and her infant from preventable suffering that can lead to death. We have to, as a society, come together and support one another especially in these dark times when poverty is in every corner of our community. We must not waiver in giving our fair share to society. These donations will be used to support our ailing healthcare system which needs urgent support.

According to the WHO, approximately 800 mothers lose their lives from preventable causes related to pregnancy and childbirth daily. That is alarming! Providing these mothers and their infants with antenatal and postnatal care will certainly aid in the reduction of mortality. Imagine your contribution saves a baby's life from suffering who'll then grow up to be a pillar in society. Imagine the reward in the hereafter for every good deed they do. That ₦500 or ₦1000 takes you to jannah insha'Allah - just imagine that. Being poor shouldn't be a death warrant for a pregnant woman.

PRESS RELEASE

UNGOGO LAFIYA WAQF FOUNDATION PAYS COURTESY VISIT TO DG KSPHCMB

The Ungogo Lafiya Waqf Foundation, a registered community-based Ethical Health Financing (EHF) initiative guided by the principles of Waqf, Zakkat, and Sadaqa, has paid a courtesy visit to the Director General, Kano State Primary Health Care Management Board (KSPHCMB), Professor Salisu Ahmad Ibrahim.

The visit was aimed at strengthening collaboration and exploring opportunities for improved community-driven health financing to enhance primary healthcare delivery across Ungogo Local Government Area and the state at large.

During the engagement, the Director General Professor Salisu Ahmad Ibrahim commended the Foundation for its pioneering efforts in promoting Islamic social financing for healthcare, acknowledging its potential to complement government investments and bridge critical gaps in the health system. He emphasized that each LGA Waqf initiative can play a vital role in providing basic but essential infrastructure such as furniture for PHC facilities, basic medicines like analgesics, and essential supplies including iodine, which directly impact service delivery and patient experience.

Professor Ibrahim also spoke passionately about the urgent need to address maternal mortality, noting that many preventable deaths occur due to lack of timely access to care, inadequate facility readiness, and delays caused by financial constraints. He stressed the importance of restoring dignity in healthcare, especially for women during pregnancy, childbirth, and the postnatal period.

He highlighted that ethical health financing models like the Waqf system offer a sustainable and culturally accepted mechanism for mobilizing community resources to ensure no woman or child is denied care due to cost or lack of basic facility needs.

The Ungogo Lafiya Waqf Foundation, established with technical support from UKAID/FCDO Lafiya Program and the International Institute of Islamic Banking and Finance, Bayero University Kano (IIIBF-BUK), reaffirmed its commitment to leveraging Waqf, Zakkat, and Sadaqa to support PHC facilities, promote maternal, newborn and child health, and reduce maternal and child mortality rates in Ungogo LGA.

The leadership of the Foundation expressed appreciation to the DG for his guidance, visionary leadership, and openness to community-led initiatives. They assured that the Foundation will continue mobilizing local resources, engaging community leaders, and fostering partnerships to strengthen PHC delivery.
