International Day of Education 2026 – Global Message
Yesterday, on the International Day of Education 2026, we are reminded that education is not merely a sector of development; it is the foundation upon which all sustainable progress is built. Education is the most powerful investment a nation, an institution, or an individual can make—an investment that yields peace, innovation, equity, and prosperity across generations.
Around the world, millions of children and young people still face barriers to quality, inclusive, and future-ready education. This reality calls for renewed global leadership, bold political will, and shared responsibility.
Governments must prioritize education not as an expense, but as strategic national infrastructure. Philanthropists, development partners, the private sector, and individuals must see education as a collective moral obligation and a global public good.
Professor Gwazo lifelong commitment to education has been guided by one simple belief: when you educate one mind, you uplift an entire society. This conviction has driven my efforts in establishing four universities across Africa—institutions built to nurture global citizens, ethical leaders, innovators, and problem-solvers equipped for a rapidly changing world.
These universities are not just centers of learning; they are platforms for intercultural dialogue, research, entrepreneurship, and values-driven leadership. And this journey does not stop here. The vision is global, expanding access to quality higher education across regions and continents, ensuring that no talent is wasted because of geography, poverty, or circumstance.
As the world embraces artificial intelligence, digital transformation, and new frontiers of knowledge, we must ensure that education systems evolve with purpose and inclusion. Technology must serve humanity, not widen inequality. Science and innovation must be guided by ethics, compassion, and social responsibility. Education must prepare learners not only for jobs, but for life, citizenship, and service to humanity.
We call on world leaders, the United Nations system, UNESCO, UNICEF, development agencies, and global partners to deepen collaboration, increase investment, and protect education in all contexts, including fragile, conflict-affected, and marginalized communities. Education must remain at the heart of humanitarian response, climate action, gender equality, and youth empowerment.
To parents, teachers, and communities: your role is indispensable. To young people: your voices, ideas, and leadership are essential in co-creating the future of education. And to policymakers: the true legacy of leadership is measured by the quality of minds you leave behind.
On this International Day of Education, let us move beyond rhetoric to action. Let us invest more, innovate boldly, and act collectively to ensure that education remains a right for all, a tool for peace, and a bridge to a more just, inclusive, and sustainable world.
Education is the most enduring gift we can give to humanity—and together, we must give it fully, fairly, and fearlessly.
