CLARIFICATION ON THE HONOURABLE MINISTER OF DEFENCE’S STATEMENT ON EMBEDDING OF MEDIA EXPERTS IN SECURITY OPERATIONS
The Honourable Minister of Defence has noted with keen interest the ongoing conversations, digital commentary, and creative satire across various social media platforms following his recent remarks regarding the engagement of media experts in operational areas.
While he appreciates the vibrant digital culture and humor of Nigerian youths, it has become imperative to address widespread misconceptions and clarify the precise intent behind his statement to prevent further misinformation.
1. No Conscription or Civilian Combat Roles
The Honourable Minister categorically states that the Federal Government is not recruiting, drafting, or requesting media experts or social media influencers to take up arms, wear uniforms, or engage in combat operations against criminals.
National defense remains the exclusive, constitutional mandate of our professionally trained Armed Forces.
2. The Concept of "Media Embedding"
The Minister's reference to providing avenues for media experts to visit the front lines refers strictly to the globally recognized public relations and journalistic practice known as media embedding. This initiative is designed to allow media experts, professional journalists, and prominent media commentators to temporarily accompany our troops during operations in the North-East, North-West, and North-Central regions, enabling them to observe and report firsthand on the realities of military operations.
Participants will serve solely as observers and storytellers and will not, under any circumstances, be required to wear military combat uniforms, carry weapons, or take part in tactical maneuvers. Their role is strictly limited to documenting and communicating their experiences and observations to the public.
3. Fostering Transparency and Shared Understanding
The primary goal of this initiative is transparency. By experiencing the operational terrain firsthand, the media can gain a deeper, more contextualized understanding of the complexities, geographic challenges, and profound sacrifices our troops make daily.
The Honourable Minister believes this ensures that public discourse surrounding national security is guided by firsthand reality rather than speculation.
4. Protecting Troop Morale
Our gallant officers and soldiers make supreme sacrifices to ensure the peace and security of our motherland.
Unwarranted, unverified commentary severely demoralizes troops who put their lives on the line. Accurate, constructive media coverage is essential to maintaining the high morale required to defeat adversaries and secure the nation.
The Honourable Minister remains fiercely committed to boosting the morale of soldiers through his three pillars, a vision he outlined during his inauguration as Minister of Defence.
Media experts, influencers, content creators, journalists, and digital stakeholders are encouraged to partner with the military constructively, using their platforms to support national unity and security rather than spreading panic, misinformation, or the propaganda videos of terrorists.
The Armed Forces of Nigeria remain committed to protecting every citizen, and the Honourable Minister welcomes an informed, responsible media partnership in this collective national effort.
