Hello friends, happy new year!

Last year we had an exciting engagement at our 1st Disability, Culture and Development (DCD) where we revisited foundational understanding (s) of disability in African Cultures.

This year, we are happy to announce that the 2nd edition of the conference will focus on understanding the intersection of disability, culture and public health in Africa.

As the days go by, we encourage scholars, students, policy makers, public health experts and members of the general public interested in disability and public health discourse to send in their abstracts.

Thank you as we anticipate your submissions.

Good News!

During our advocacy visit to the Vice Chancellor of Bayero University Kano, Prof. Haruna Musa, and members of the university management in September this year, the V.C, after hearing directly from the experiences of students with disabilities in our team, pledged the commitment of the university to inclusive education.

We are happy to share that Bayero University Kano has launched an ICT centre for visually impaired students in the university. This was one of the issues discussed in September.

Also, the V.C and his team are currently working on another major promise which will further consolidate his commitment to inclusive education.

Thank you sir!

During our engagement with disability inclusion focal persons in Kaduna State University last week, one of the resource persons, Ms Deborah Ayomide Shaba shared her lived experiences as a person with albinism while growing up. This angle humanised the entire conversation.

At the end, the participants confessed that they had hitherto been taking alot of issues relating to disability for granted, while admitting that they were now better prepared to operationalise disability inclusive education in the university.

Last week, ICAD in collaboration with Disability Support Unit, Kaduna State University, engaged the university's Disability Inclusion Focal Persons on inclusive tertiary education.

We had three resource persons: Mal. Suleiman Abdulazeez, the Chairman of Joint National Association of Persons with Disabilities (JONAPWD) Kaduna Chapter, Ms. Deborah Ayomide Shaba, disability inclusion and accessibility advocate and Dr. Mujaheed Abdullahi, a disability and Hausa studies scholar.

The purpose of the engagement was to equip the focal persons with the requisite knowledge on disability inclusion, while stimulating their thoughts on how to operationalise a truly inclusive education in the university.

Through a mixture of theoretical exploration and sharing of true life experiences, the focal persons testified that their eyes of understanding were truly enlightened on the subject of disability inclusion, adding that they were now better equiped to start discharging their responsibilities as the foot soldiers of disability inclusion in the university.
