CACPE — 2025: With thanks and hope

On this final day of 2025 we give sincere thanks to our staff, volunteers, families and partners for their tireless work and steadfast belief in a sustainable future. This year we advanced community tree planting, environmental education, clean-energy pilots and many local clean-ups — together we made measurable, local change.

We faced challenges, especially funding continuity and operational logistics and we learned from them. Looking to 2026, CACPE will scale the most successful pilots, strengthen local ownership, and deepen partnerships across Nigeria.

From our family to yours: thank you for your trust.

Please share this post to celebrate our collective effort and invite others to join us in the months ahead.

FIELD UPDATE: CLIMATE VULNERABILITY MAPPING IN ZAMFARA STATE

On 15th September 2025, our team at the conducted an intensive fieldwork exercise from 9:00am to 6:00pm, focused on climate change vulnerability mapping in selected communities across Zamfara State. The journey was tough, emotional, educational, and incredibly impactful.

In Damba farming communities, we mapped the devastating effects of prolonged drought and lack of rainfall on smallholder farmers and livelihoods. In Kwatar-kwashi, we examined the alarming level of deforestation and its consequences on land fertility, livelihoods, and local climate patterns. Our work in Wanke community highlighted severe cases of wind erosion, while in Gangaren gulbi, we documented the community’s increasing vulnerability to flooding.

This fieldwork was a real eye-opener. Every community told a story. Every face reflected resilience. Every challenge strengthened our resolve.

Data successfully captured
Community voices documented
Risks identified
Solutions in progress

We are now working to translate this data into a visual vulnerability map, which will be shared with: • Donors
• Government agencies
• Development partners
• Relevant stakeholders in Zamfara State and beyond

This is not just research, this is inclusivity, action, planning, and advocacy for a safer and more climate-resilient future.

We thank the communities for their openness, courage, and collaboration. The journey continues…

Greening Our Health Spaces — One Tree at a Time!

G-CAN Project | Federal Medical Centre Gusau | 7 November 2025

Our GCAN project team proudly led a transformative tree-planting exercise at the Community Medicine Annex of the Federal Medical Centre (FMC) Gusau, a bold step toward building healthier, greener, and climate-resilient hospital environments.

Through the support and dedication of our young climate volunteers, we successfully planted dozens of Date Palm (Dabino/Hyphaene Thebaica) and Olive seedlings, symbolizing hope, healing, and long-term environmental protection within the hospital premises. These trees will not only beautify the environment but also improve air quality, provide shade, support biodiversity, and promote the wellbeing of patients, health workers, and the surrounding community.

This initiative is part of the ongoing Grassroots Climate Action in Nigeria (GCAN) Project, focused on empowering communities with practical climate solutions. By greening public spaces like hospitals, we reinforce our belief that climate action must be visible, inclusive, and people-centered.

A huge appreciation to the management and staff of FMC Gusau for their warm collaboration, and to our committed team for driving meaningful change, one seedling at a time. Together, we are planting trees, but more importantly, we are planting a legacy.

Climate Action Starts Here.

Empowering Minds for a Sustained Gusau

Capacity Building on “The Link Between Deforestation and Flooding” — Gusau, Zamfara State

In our continued effort to strengthen local climate action, the Civil Alliance for Climate Protection and Education - CACPE completes day 3 out of 3 Days intensive capacity building workshop with theme “The Link Between Deforestation and Flooding: A Case Study of Gusau.”

Delivered by Muhammad Habibu Gusau, the session provided deep insights into how deforestation is accelerating flooding, soil erosion, and livelihood loss in Zamfara State, and what we can do collectively to reverse these trends.

Participants listened with enthusiasm, shared personal experiences, and were grouped into three dynamic teams for brainstorming and competition. Their ideas reflected creativity, passion, and community wisdom. Group One emerged as the best-performing team, demonstrating exceptional understanding and innovation.

We are proud of our participants for their commitment and strong engagement throughout the training. We also collected valuable feedback to further improve our programs and inspire more climate resilience initiatives across Northern Nigeria.

This event reaffirmed one truth, when knowledge meets passion, transformation begins.

Together, we can restore our forests, protect our communities, and build a sustainable future for Gusau and beyond.

📸 Highlights: Training session, group work moments, and the winning team celebration.

Successful Launch of the Date Palm Planting Campaign!

We are pleased to announce the successful co-hosting of the Date Palm Plantation Campaign held on October 4, 2025, at the Federal University Gusau, Zamfara State, Nigeria.

The event was organized by the Global Environmental and Climate Conservation Initiative (GECCI) in collaboration with the Students’ Representative Council of Federal University Gusau, and the Civil Alliance for Climate Protection and Education (CACPE) through the ongoing Grassroots Climate Action in Nigeria (GCAN) project.

The campaign focused on empowering communities for climate action through tree planting, with strong emphasis on gender equality, women’s empowerment, and improved nutrition outcomes. Participants included students, community leaders, and climate advocates who collectively contributed to advancing local environmental resilience.

Through the GCAN Samaru Climate Committee framework, CACPE played a strategic role in mobilizing youth, facilitating awareness sessions, and supporting practical demonstrations of sustainable date palm cultivation — reinforcing the importance of climate-smart livelihoods and community-driven adaptation.

The event marks another milestone in our shared mission to promote climate-conscious communities and sustainable environmental stewardship across Northern Nigeria.
