KADUNA STATE COMMENCES THREE-DAY CO-CREATION WORKSHOP ON REVIEW AND ADAPTATION OF WDC GUIDELINES TO STRENGTHEN COMMUNITY-LED PRIMARY HEALTHCARE GOVERNANCE

The Kaduna State Primary Health Care Board (KSPHCB) has commenced a three-day co-creation workshop on the review and adaptation of the Ward Development Committee (WDC) Guidelines, beginning today and scheduled to end on Thursday, as part of efforts to strengthen community-led primary healthcare governance across the state.

The workshop is the first of its kind in the country in this format. Other states are expected to emulate the system once it is fully rolled out into action.

The Executive Secretary of the Board was represented by the Director, Family and Community Health Services, who presented the state’s position and provided direction on the review and adaptation process for the WDC guidelines. The sessions focused on standardising WDC operations across all wards, strengthening community ownership of primary healthcare services, addressing gaps in grassroots health governance structures, and aligning implementation with ongoing national primary healthcare reforms. The engagement also set out steps for improved implementation aimed at better coordination and addressing existing inefficiencies at ward level.

The workshop brought together key development partners and stakeholders, including the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), the Gates Foundation, the National Primary Health Care Development Agency, the Clinton Health Access Initiative, PATHFINDER International, Society for Family Health Nigeria, Nigeria Health Watch, Ahmadu Bello University Teaching Hospital, the Ministry of Health, the Ministry for Human Services, Centre for Communication and Social Impact, Leadership Initiative for Sustainable Development, International Society for Media in Public Health, traditional leaders, and other critical actors in the health sector.

The engagement highlighted Kaduna State’s ongoing efforts to reposition ward-level health governance as a functional and accountable platform for improved service delivery. It advanced multi-sectoral alignment on the WDC implementation strategy, validated the guideline framework, and reflected growing interest from other states in the Kaduna model as a reference point for primary healthcare reform.

The workshop is expected to conclude on Thursday, with outcomes anticipated to further improve accountability, coordination, and community ownership of primary healthcare delivery across the state.

Kaduna State under the leadership of His Excellency, Senator Uba Sani, CON has taken an important step toward strengthening public health with the launch of the DRIVE (Direct Delivery of Routine Immunization Vaccines for Equity) initiative.
This programme is a collaborative effort involving the National Primary Health Care Development Agency (NPHCDA), UNICEF, Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance, the Republic of Korea, and the Kaduna State Government, alongside partners such as the World Health Organization and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.

The initiative introduces the use of qualified third-party logistics (3PL) providers to ensure vaccines and essential Primary Health Care (PHC) commodities are delivered efficiently, safely, and on time especially to hard-to-reach communities. By strengthening the supply chain and improving last-mile delivery, DRIVE aims to:

1️⃣ Increase the availability of life-saving vaccines at health facilities.
2️⃣ Reduce the number of “zero-dose” children who have never received routine immunization.
3️⃣ Improve equity in access to healthcare services across underserved areas.
4️⃣ Support Nigeria’s broader strategy to build a more resilient and responsive immunization system.

In simple terms, DRIVE is about making sure vaccines don’t just arrive in the country they reach every child who needs them, no matter how remote their location. It reflects a shift from supply to impact, where logistics, partnerships, and accountability work together to close immunization gaps.

Strengthening Grassroots Healthcare

Earlier today, the Governor of Kaduna State flagged off the distribution of medical equipment to Primary Health Care (PHC) facilities across the state. He also commissioned the newly constructed, ultra-modern headquarters of the Kaduna State Primary Health Care Board at No. 64 Tafawa Balewa Way, Kaduna.
Key Highlights:

✅ This distribution will ensure that local facilities have the essential tools needed for accurate diagnosis, effective treatment, and quality patient care—specifically for women, children, and vulnerable groups.

✅ The new PHC Board complex will serve as a strategic hub to coordinate, monitor, and implement health policies more efficiently across the state.

✅These actions reaffirm the Governor’s commitment to making Primary Health Care the bedrock of a responsive, people-centered health system.

✅ This milestone is a major step in the Governor’s resolve to invest in health infrastructure and human resources, moving Kaduna closer to achieving Universal Health Coverage.
