This World Nutrition Day, remember that healthy eating is not about perfection, it’s about balance, variety, and the small choices we make every day.
Choosing more fruits and vegetables, drinking enough water, cutting down on excess sugar and salt, and eating wholesome foods can go a long way in preventing diseases like diabetes, heart disease, stroke, and some cancers.
Healthy habits start early, but it’s never too late to make better choices for your body and mind.

🚢⚠️ WHO is monitoring a cluster of severe illness linked to a cruise ship carrying 147 passengers and crew.

*So far:*

🦠 7 cases identified (2 confirmed hantavirus infections)
⚫️ 3 deaths
🏥 1 person in intensive care

🐀 Hantavirus is a rare but serious disease usually spread through contact with infected rodent urine, saliva or droppings — not through casual everyday contact.

*Symptoms can include:*

🤒 fever
🤢 nausea or diarrhoea
😮‍💨 breathing difficulties
🫁 pneumonia-like illness

*The good news:*

🌍 WHO currently assesses the risk to the global public as low.
✈️ No travel restrictions are recommended.

*Health teams are working across several countries to:*

✔️ test patients
✔️ trace contacts
✔️ isolate suspected cases
✔️ provide medical care

*Practical tips:*

🧼 Wash hands regularly
🐭 Avoid contact with rodents or rodent waste
🌬️ Ensure good ventilation in enclosed spaces
😷 If sick with respiratory symptoms, isolate and seek care early

Most travel remains very low risk. WHO continues to closely monitor the situation.

The bitter pill We’re All tired of swallowing

Millions of people all over the world are at risk of malaria, with over 600,000 deaths recorded in 2024 alone. Tragically, the vast majority of these are children under five it is a heartbreak that occurs nearly every minute. While the world watches these numbers, Africa continues to bear over 95% of the global burden. And here in Nigeria, we are the very epicenter, accounting for more than 30% of all global malaria deaths.

I don’t know a single person in around me in Nigeria who hasn’t contacted malaria. In fact even in 2026 alone, I can’t name one friend, neighbor, or colleague who hasn’t already battled "fever" at least once this year. It has become a normalized part of our Nigerian identity, but it shouldn't be.

Malaria isn’t just a health issue; it’s an economic thief. It steals our workdays, our school hours, and our hard-earned money.

We need our government to step up. We have the tools; new vaccines, better nets, and advanced treatments but we are being held back by a lack of consistent funding, poor drainage systems that turn our streets into breeding grounds, and the rising cost of effective drugs. We cannot "out-treat" a dirty environment or a broken supply chain.

Total elimination is possible, but only if we stop treating malaria like a "normal" part of life and start treating it like the emergency it is.

We call government in all levels to prioritize the Malaria Elimination Fund and fix our local sanitation systems. To you reading this: don't wait for "malaria symptoms". Protect your space, use your nets, and demand better healthcare from your local leaders.

We are tired of the malaria cycle. Now is the time, Now we can. Now we must💪🏾.
