MARCH EDUCATION ADVOCACY MESSAGE
Child's Holistic Development Under Fire Protecting Learning for Displaced Children
Planned migration is difficult enough. Families who prepare to relocate often do so with time to plan schooling, housing, and continuity for their children.
But across Nigeria today, many families are not moving by choice.
They are fleeing.
Crisis-induced displacement has forced thousands of families to leave their communities overnight abandoning homes, livelihoods, and stability. When families arrive in new towns and cities, survival becomes the immediate priority.
And for many children, education is the first casualty.
Children who were once active students suddenly become out-of-school not because they lack ability or desire to learn, but because displacement strips families of financial capacity, documentation, uniforms, and admission access.
Days turn into weeks. Weeks become months.
The longer a child stays out of school, the greater the risks: learning loss, emotional distress, exposure to unsafe environments, child labour, early marriage, and long-term social exclusion.
Education is more than classroom instruction. It provides structure, protection, psychosocial stability, and hope. School restores normalcy for children whose sense of safety has been disrupted.
At this critical moment, a compassionate administrative response can change life trajectories.
We respectfully appeal to education authorities and policymakers to consider a temporary standing directive allowing public school heads to enroll children from verified displaced communities without immediate payment of fees — even on a provisional basis — while families rebuild their socio-economic footing.
Such a measure would not only preserve learning continuity but also protect vulnerable children during one of the most fragile periods of their lives.
A child displaced by crisis should not also be displaced from education.
Providing temporary access to schooling affirms a simple national commitment: that every child, regardless of circumstance, deserves continuity of learning and the opportunity to grow into a productive citizen.
Small administrative flexibility today can prevent long-term educational loss tomorrow.
Together, we can ensure that displacement does not define a child’s future.
