PRESS RELEASE

NANS COMMEMORATES 2025 INTERNATIONAL DAY AGAINST DRUG ABUSE AND ILLICIT TRAFFICKING, URGES STUDENTS TO SHUN DRUGS AND CALLS FOR COLLABORATION WITH RELEVANT STAKEHOLDERS TO CURB THIS MENACE

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) joins the global community in commemorating the 2025 International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, themed "The Evidence is Clear: Invest in Prevention." This day serves as a clarion call to action against the growing menace of drug abuse, particularly among Nigerian youths and students.

NANS President, Comrade Olushola L Oladoja, unequivocally condemns drug abuse and its devastating consequences on the physical, mental, and emotional well-being of students.

NANS call on all Nigerian students to shun drug abuse and illicit trafficking. The temporary allure of drugs is a dangerous trap that leads to addiction, academic failure, health deterioration, and ruined futures. As the leaders of tomorrow, students must prioritize their education, personal growth, and positive contributions to society over the fleeting temptations of substance abuse. NANS urges students to embrace healthy lifestyles, seek counselling when needed, and report suspicious drug-related activities on campuses to relevant authorities.

To combat this menace effectively, NANS President, Comrade Oladoja Olushola, calls for stronger collaboration between the Federal Ministries of Education and Youths Development, National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), Heads of tertiary institutions, parents/wards, religious and comminity leaders, civil society organizations, and other critical stakeholders. We propose the establishment of joint task forces, awareness campaigns, and rehabilitation programs tailored to students to curb the spread of drug abuse. NANS is ready to partner with NAFDAC and other agencies to organize workshops, seminars, and community outreach initiatives to educate students on the dangers of drug abuse and promote prevention strategies.

We commend NAFDAC and NDLEA for their ongoing efforts in regulating and combating illicit drugs but urge them to intensify their operations, particularly in targeting drug cartels and peddlers exploiting vulnerable students. We also appeal to the government to increase funding for drug prevention programs, enforce stricter penalties for drug trafficking, and provide accessible rehabilitation centers for those struggling with addiction.

NANS remains committed to advocating for the welfare and future of Nigerian students. Let us unite in saying NO to drugs and YES to a drug-free, prosperous Nigeria. Together, we can end the menace of drug abuse and secure a brighter future for our nation.

PRESS RELEASE

NANS COMMENDS FEDERAL GOVERNMENT ON N45,000 NAIRA STIPEND FOR TECHNICAL COLLEGE STUDENTS, CALLS FOR BROADER INTERVENTION IN TERTIARY EDUCATION

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) extends its heartfelt appreciation to the Federal Government of Nigeria for the recent announcement of a N45,000 monthly stipend for students attending technical colleges nationwide. This initiative, as revealed by Prof. Idris Bugaje, the Executive Secretary of the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE), marks a significant step toward revitalizing Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) in Nigeria, a sector critical to national development and youth empowerment.

NANS National President, Comrade Oladoja Olushola, notes that the decision to provide this stipend as a grant, rather than a loan, demonstrates the government’s commitment to encouraging young Nigerians to acquire technical skills that will enhance their employability both locally and internationally. NANS acknowledges the Federal Government’s foresight in addressing the decline of TVET, which has seen the number of technical colleges dwindle to 129, compared to 15,000 senior secondary schools, as noted by Prof. Bugaje. This initiative aligns with the urgent need to tackle youth unemployment and foster economic growth through skilled manpower, a point further supported by historical challenges outlined in a 2023 ResearchGate report on TVET’s inadequate funding and infrastructure.

NANS also commends the government’s partnership with the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) to disburse these funds, ensuring accessibility and transparency in the process. This move not only positions technical education as an attractive pathway for young Nigerians but also sets a precedent for innovative educational funding models in the country.

However, while this intervention is a commendable step forward, NANS urges the Federal Government to extend similar support to other tertiary institutions and their students across Nigeria. The broader tertiary education sector continues to grapple with significant challenges, including inadequate infrastructure, outdated curricula, and insufficient funding for both students and educators.

NANS President, Comrade Olushola Oladoja, emphasize that education remains the bedrock of national development, and a holistic approach to addressing the challenges in the tertiary education sector will yield long-term benefits for Nigeria’s economy and global competitiveness. We stand ready to collaborate with the Federal Government, NBTE, and other stakeholders to ensure the success of these initiatives and the broader reform of Nigeria’s education system.

We once again applaud the Federal Government for this progressive step and look forward to more transformative policies that will empower Nigerian students and position our nation as a global leader in education and innovation.

The NANS National President, Comrade Olushola Oladoja, commended the NAPS President and his newly inaugurated executives for their dedication to the student movement and expressed optimism about his leadership in advancing the cause of Nigerian Polytechnic students. NANS President reiterates that the NAPS leadership is a testament of their commitments to the welfare and progress of students. I congratulate you on this well-deserved position and wish you a successful tenure.

NANS President reiterates an extended timely and strategic developmental partnership in the continued quest for effective representation and advocacy for polytechnic students across Nigeria. While expressing optimism for a fruitful collaboration between NANS and NAPS, the NANS President also used the opportunity to remind the newly inaugurated NAPS President of the historic responsibilities that come with student leadership.

The NANS President urged the NAPS President to prioritize the interest of polytechnic students, advocate for improved learning conditions, fight against all forms of injustice within tertiary institutions, and continue the struggle for educational equity.

NANS President reminded everyone present that he has always been a critical stakeholder who have always had the interest of NAPS at heart. He also called for unbroken unity amongst the executives as they will achieve more standing together, shoulder to shoulder in the cause for advocating for the rights of students, educational development, and peaceful coexistence in all our campuses.

The NANS President, Comrade Olushola Oladoja, pledged the continued support of the national students’ body to the leadership of NAPS, calling for unity, cooperation, and a renewed focus on the shared struggle for students’ rights and welfare.

NANS will always stand ready to work hand-in-hand with the present NAPS National leadership to confront the systemic challenges that plague our educational institutions, from poor infrastructure and inadequate funding to issues of insecurity and lack of inclusion. We must remain resolute in our collective struggle for justice, academic freedom, and the dignity of every Nigerian student.

*Celebrating Two Years of Purposeful Leadership: NANS Commend President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Educational Reforms and Student-Centered Policies*

As President Bola Ahmed Tinubu marks two impactful years in office, the leadership of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) proudly commends his administration for the strides made in reforming the education sector and prioritizing the welfare of Nigerian students.

Under his visionary leadership, the successful implementation of the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) stands out as a revolutionary step towards inclusive education. By addressing the long-standing challenges of financial inaccessibility, this initiative has brought renewed hope to countless students across the country and further reinforced education as a fundamental right.

We also acknowledge the President’s proactive engagement in resolving the recurring issues with the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), working tirelessly to ensure stability in the academic calendar and minimizing disruptions that have plagued the tertiary education system for years.

These bold moves signify a leadership committed to building a stronger, more resilient academic environment. On behalf of Nigerian students nationwide, we say thank you, Mr. President. We look forward to even more groundbreaking interventions in the education sector and beyond.

*NANS Achieves Global Milestone: Officially Recognized as Member of Global Student Forum*

In a historic development for Nigerian student representation, the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has received official confirmation of membership from the Global Student Forum (GSF) — the worldwide umbrella body for democratic and representative student movements.

According to the membership confirmation issued from GSF headquarters in Copenhagen, Denmark, dated 28 May 2025, NANS is now formally recognized as a full member through its active and established membership in both the All-Africa Students Union (AASU) and the Commonwealth Students Association (CSA).

This recognition grants NANS full access to participate in GSF consultations, campaigns, and international policy processes — a significant leap in ensuring that Nigerian students’ voices are heard on global platforms.

Speaking on this achievement, many student leaders and stakeholders have applauded the visionary leadership of Comrade Olushola Oladoja, whose commitment to transparency, strategic engagement, and global outreach has begun to reposition NANS on the world stage.

"Under President Oladoja’s leadership, NANS is not only being reformed locally, but it is also gaining long-overdue global visibility and legitimacy," said a member of the digital media team.

With this membership, NANS is now better positioned to collaborate with student unions across continents, influence international education policies, and drive inclusive global youth development. It is a testament to the ongoing digital and diplomatic transformation happening under the current administration.

This is not just a win for NANS, but a proud moment for over 40 million Nigerian students whose voices will now echo in multilateral spaces and shape the future of global student activism.

*NANS Celebrates Children’s Day, Reaffirming Commitment to a Brighter Future for Every Nigerian Child*

Today, May 27th, 2025, we join the rest of the world in celebrating Children’s Day, a day dedicated to honouring the joy, potential, and boundless promise that every child represents. It is more than just a celebration; it is a solemn reminder of our collective responsibility to protect, educate, nurture, and empower our children.

Children are the heartbeat of every nation. They are future leaders, innovators, teachers, and builders. As we celebrate them today, we must renew our commitment to providing an environment that allows them to grow with dignity, safety, and love. A society that invests in its children invests in a future of greatness.

Let us rise to the challenge of building a Nigeria where no child is left behind, a country where every boy and girl, regardless of their background, has access to quality education, proper healthcare, a safe environment, and the freedom to dream big.

To every child across our beloved nation, we see you, we hear you, and we believe in you. Keep shining, keep growing, and never stop dreaming because you are the true architects of tomorrow.

Happy Children’s Day, Nigeria!
