Saving the Future Today | Transformed Children Transforming Their World

Impartville Children Development and Empowerment Initiative (ICDEI) is a Nigerian child-focused, community-based organisation committed to protecting, educating and empowering children and families experiencing vulnerability, poverty, displacement, conflict and other barriers to their wellbeing and development.

Our work is grounded in a simple conviction: children should not have to pay the price for circumstances they did not create. Every child deserves safety, dignity, education, emotional support, opportunity and the chance to grow into their full potential.

Through our programmes, community outreach and partnerships, ICDEI has engaged children and families in conflict- and crisis-affected communities across Plateau State, including Mangu, Bokkos, Barkin Ladi, Bassa and Riyom, alongside our wider work in Jos and surrounding communities.

Our Engagement with Children and Families

Our outreach responds to the realities faced by children whose lives have been disrupted by conflict, displacement, poverty, insecurity and loss of access to education and protective support.

Our engagement has included:

- Child protection and safeguarding – promoting safer environments where children can be protected from abuse, exploitation, violence and neglect.
- Education support and learning recovery – helping vulnerable and displaced children remain connected to learning and regain confidence after disruption.
- Psychosocial and emotional support – creating opportunities for children to express themselves, rebuild confidence, develop resilience and experience positive childhood experiences.
- Mentorship and life-skills development – helping children and adolescents develop character, emotional intelligence, leadership, responsible decision-making and positive relationships.
- Family and caregiver engagement – recognising that sustainable child protection requires stronger families and supportive caregivers.
- Community-based outreach – working with communities to identify children's needs and connect them with appropriate support.
- Inclusion and dignity – paying particular attention to children who face additional vulnerabilities because of displacement, poverty, disability, gender or difficult family circumstances.

Children Affected by Conflict Need More Than Survival

Children living in conflict-affected communities are not responsible for the violence and insecurity around them, yet they often experience the consequences through displacement, interrupted education, loss of livelihoods, separation from loved ones, fear, trauma and reduced access to essential services.

ICDEI therefore approaches humanitarian response from a child-centred and protection-conscious perspective.

Our goal is not simply to provide temporary relief. We seek to help create environments in which children can feel safe, learn, heal, develop resilience and participate positively in rebuilding their families and communities.

From Emergency Response to Long-Term Resilience

ICDEI believes that protecting children requires both immediate response and long-term investment.

Our work therefore connects:

Protection → Education → Psychosocial Wellbeing → Mentorship → Family Strengthening → Community Resilience

This integrated approach enables us to respond to immediate vulnerabilities while also addressing some of the conditions that can leave children exposed to further harm.

Our Community Reach

Through our outreach and partnerships, ICDEI has engaged with children, families, caregivers, community leaders and other stakeholders in communities including:

Mangu | Bokkos | Barkin Ladi | Bassa | Riyom | Jos and surrounding communities

These engagements have strengthened our understanding of the realities facing children in conflict-affected and underserved communities and reinforced our commitment to locally grounded, child-centred solutions.

Our Commitment

ICDEI is committed to strengthening protective environments in which every child—regardless of where they live, their family circumstances, disability, gender or displacement status—can be protected from harm and supported to thrive.

We believe that children cannot wait for the world to become perfect before they are given the opportunity to learn, heal, dream and build a future.

Our commitment is therefore to save the future today by standing with vulnerable children, strengthening families and working with communities to create pathways from vulnerability to resilience.

“I need to be intentional about my son.”

1. Your son may be fighting battles he has never told you about.
A boy can laugh at the dinner table and still be struggling with peer pressure, bullying, po*******hy, rejection, loneliness, anger, or confusion.
The painful truth: many boys are taught to “be strong” before they are taught how to ask for help.

👉 Mentorship gives boys a safe environment to talk, learn, and grow.

2. You may know your son—but you may not know who is influencing him.
Your son spends hours interacting with friends, social media, influencers, gaming communities and online content.
What if the voices shaping his values are louder than yours?
You cannot follow him everywhere. But you can equip him with the confidence and judgment to make good choices when you aren't there.

👉 Mentorship helps boys develop discernment, confidence and decision-making skills.

3. The boy who cannot say “NO” today may struggle to resist bigger pressures tomorrow.
It may begin with something seemingly small:
“Just try it.”
“Everybody is doing it.”
“Don't be scared.”
“Keep it secret.”
Peer pressure rarely announces where it is going.
A child who has never learned healthy boundaries may struggle when the stakes become much higher.

👉 Teach him to stand firm before the pressure comes.

4. One wrong friendship can influence years of parenting.
You have spent years teaching your son values.
But one powerful peer group can tell him:
“Your parents don't understand.”
“Real men do this.”
“Don't be a snitch.”
“Everybody does it.”
Suddenly, your voice becomes “old school” and the crowd becomes his teacher.
Don't wait until you are fighting to get your son back.

👉 Give him positive mentors and a healthy community where good values are reinforced.

5. One day, you will not be able to protect him with your presence.
You won't always be beside him at school.
You won't always know where he is.
You won't always know who he is with.
You won't always be able to make the decision for him.
The ultimate goal of parenting is not to control your son's environment forever—it is to prepare him to make wise choices when you are not there.
That is why mentorship matters.
ICDEI: Don't wait for a crisis to start preparing your son.
Register him for the Monthly Boys Mentorship Program.
Because we are not simply raising boys for today. We are preparing the men they will become tomorrow.

This special edition of We Are Jos Kids on Tincityfm 104.3Fm Tincityfm Jos with Shola Shedrach Faloye was both enlightening and impactful. A big thank you to our special guest, Mrs. Sandra Dirmwa Dimka Chikan Plateau State Coordinator of the Child Protection Network CPN - Plateau State, for sharing valuable insights on child protection and missing children.
