Individuals with mental health conditions like anxiety or depression may use drugs in an attempt to alleviate symptoms and hide painful thoughts and feelings. This avoidance can be seen as "caging" of the darkness.
Initially, drugs may provide temporary relief, creating the illusion of control over one's pain. However, this is a form of avoidance, and the underlying issues remain unaddressed, when these emotions are suppressed, they gain control from the shadows, influencing decisions and actions without conscious awareness. The "darkness" grows, leading to a cycle where more of the substance is needed to keep the feelings at bay, often worsening the mental health conditions in the long run.
Let me remind you that recovery requires vulnerability and an end to hiding. By acknowledging the pain and trauma that led to addiction—bringing it into the light through therapy, support groups, and open communication, an individual can begin to address the root causes and work towards true healing.
Neurobiologically, addiction involves a "dark side" or "anti-reward system" where brain stress systems become dysregulated, leading to a neg*tive emotional state during withdrawal. This chronic stress can drive 'compulsive drug-seeking' behavior in the person, in a desperate attempt to find relief. Only by confronting and working through this cycle, rather than continually numbing it with drugs, can an individual recover.
In essence, you must face your inner demons head-on to conquer them; using drugs to keep them "caged" is a temporary, and ultimately destructive, avoidance strategy.
