🌱 Strengthening Sustainable Livelihoods at the Kihang Buhit PEACE FARM

Following the successful cultivation of Congo grass, Mucuna beans, and organic maize at the Kihang Buhit PEACE FARM, beneficiaries will now be equipped with practical skills on forage preservation using Hay and Silage methods.

With the support of the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) through the SPRING Programme in Nigeria, this next phase of training is designed to ensure that farmers and herders can preserve nutritious livestock feed for use during the dry season, improving livestock productivity while reducing pressure on grazing lands.

Through this training, beneficiaries will be able to:
• Preserve surplus forage for future use
• Improve livestock nutrition and productivity
• Strengthen resilience during periods of pasture scarcity
• Promote sustainable cooperation between farmers and herders

This initiative continues to demonstrate how shared knowledge, sustainable agriculture, and collaborative learning can support peaceful coexistence, improved livelihoods, and climate-resilient farming systems in Kihang Buhit community, Bassa LGA of Plateau State.

SPRING PROGRAMME FIELD VERIFICATION VISIT

Today, the SPRING Team (Epraim Emma, Donatus Callistus, and Jamila Abubakar) visited the Peace Farm in Kihang Buhit Community, Bassa LGA, to verify the progress and impact of project activities implemented by YARAC.

During the visit, the team interacted with farmers and herders who have adopted sustainable forage production, organic manure production, and milk processing into cheese and yoghurt as part of efforts to promote peaceful coexistence and sustainable livelihoods.

The farmers and herders have formed the United Farmers and Herders Multipurpose Cooperative Society Limited, located at No. 2 Kihang Road, Jebbu Bassa, where they shared their experiences, lessons learned, and the positive impact of the capacity-building support provided through the program.

The team also engaged with women groups who have started processing and marketing milk products, including their newly branded product “PEACE Yoghurt.”

These initiatives demonstrate how economic cooperation and shared livelihoods can strengthen trust, reduce tensions, and build lasting peace between farming and herding communities.

This initiative is supported by the UK Government through the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) under the Strengthening Peace and Resilience in Nigeria (SPRING) Programme, in partnership with Tetra Tech and ActionAid Nigeria, and delivered by YARAC.
