It's unfortunate that many events only take into considerations accessibility at the registration points on the day of the event.

Until persons with disability arrive before you start seeing the organizers running up and down, asking who will interpret, where do we get ramps? Is there any wheelchair close by? etc.

At some point, they would still ask the Deaf participants to contact any interpreter with the instruction that the interpreter should not expect anything after the event.

Like seriously? Who do they take sign language interpreters for? They aren't invited to the event, yet they are needed urgently when the event is about to begin. Aborting what they planned to do that day and rushing like mad to go and interprete, only to come home exhausted and begin to think what they would eat and where to get the money for foods. Not to talk about their health beings.

Dear organizers, before you factor persons with disabilities in your event, ensure proper arrangements are made for all categories of persons with disabilities so that all will have access to the event.

Sign language interpreters are doing their jobs too. Just as you hire the services of careters, DJs, entertainers, etc, so are sign language interpreters too. Pay them. Ensure adequate preparations for them. It's not the duty of the Deaf you invited to your event to provide sign language interpreter. Make the arrangement earlier and ensure the SLI is factored in your plans.

Stop rushing them unnecessarily.

In an effort to increase advocacy and awareness about the Deaf community, the leadership of the Plateau Association of the Deaf-PAD had on July 16th 2026 paid an advocacy visit to the office of the Executive Secretary, Plateau State Christian Pilgrimage Board.

We were delighted to have a robust engagement with the management of the Board where we present the aims, objectives of the association and the challenges faced by the deaf community in Plateau State.

The leadership of PAD appreciated the management of the CPB for the opportunity accorded them to present their challenges and seek for the CPB's intervention to mitigate the challenges.

Responding to critical points and probable solutions presented by PAD, the ES expressed appreciation to PAD officials, assuring them of his commitment to inclusive participations in the programs of CPB.
