OFFICIAL ANNOUNCEMENT

This is an important announcement to all indigenes of Katsina-Ala Local Government Area who are currently studying in higher institutions across Nigeria.

The Executive Chairman of Katsina-Ala Local Government Council and Chairman of ALGON, Benue State Chapter, Rt. Hon. Shaku Justine Orangoholga Agabi, PhD, has initiated a scholarship scheme for Katsina-Ala indigenes studying in higher institutions across the country.

To coordinate the scholarship programme, a committee has been constituted with Dr. Terna Kondom as Chairman.

Other members of the committee are Dr. Richard Abu; Hon. Atule Samuel, Adviser on Special Duties and Intergovernmental Affairs; and Rt. Hon. Alfred Orya Atera, while Dr. Mrs. Gladys Shiminenge Vegher will serve as the Secretary.

Interested and qualified students should take note!

Application forms will be available from Monday, 21st September, 2026.

PRESS STATEMENT

Gov Alia Decries Ayilamo Attack, Commiserates with Victims, Commends DSS for Arrests

Governor Hyacinth Alia denounces the gruesome attack on the Ayilamo community in the Logo Local Government Area, which led to the tragic loss of innocent lives, including four police officers.

He said, "This despicable act is an attack on the peace-loving people of Ayilamo and a grave threat to the security and stability of Benue State.

“The reported killing of four law enforcement officers is particularly painful and underscores the enormous sacrifices being made by security personnel in the line of duty”.

He described it as a disturbing reminder of the persistent insecurity and repeated attacks on vulnerable communities and law-enforcement officers in the area.

Governor Alia said, “I extend heartfelt condolences to the people of Ayilamo, the families of all the victims, and the entire Logo Local Government community. We mourn with you and assure you that you are not alone in this difficult period”.

The Governor also commiserates with the Inspector-General of Police and the Commissioner of Police, Benue State Command, over the loss of the four officers who paid the supreme price in the service of their fatherland.

He said, “We honour their courage and sacrifice and pray that God grants their families, colleagues, and loved ones the strength to bear this irreparable loss”.

Governor Alia commends the Department of State Services, particularly its personnel in Benue and Nasarawa States, for the prompt and professional operation that led to the arrest of three suspects allegedly connected with the Ayilamo attack.

He described the arrest as a significant step towards uncovering the full circumstances of the incident and bringing those responsible to justice.

He said, "We urge the DSS to intensify its investigation and make the best use of the information obtained from the suspects in its custody.

“Every available lead should be diligently followed to identify and arrest the remaining accomplices, sponsors, collaborators, and other persons connected with the attack. All those found culpable must face the full weight of the law”, he asked.

He assured that his administration will continue to collaborate with the security agencies to strengthen security in Ayilamo, Logo, and other vulnerable communities across the State.

He said, "We are committed to supporting efforts aimed at preventing further attacks, protecting residents, restoring peace, and ensuring that affected communities receive the necessary attention and support.

"We appeal to the people of Ayilamo and surrounding communities to remain calm, vigilant, and law-abiding.

“I encourage residents to provide credible and timely information to the security agencies while refraining from actions that could heighten tension or undermine the ongoing investigation”.

The Governor further assures the people of Ayilamo and the entire State that they will not be abandoned, saying, “saying we remain resolute in our determination to protect lives and property, uphold justice, and restore lasting peace across Benue State”.

POLICE REPEL ARMED BANDITS' ATTACK ON AYILAMO COMMUNITY

The Benue State Police Command wishes to inform members of the public of the repelled attack on Ayilamo Community in Logo Local Government Area of Benue State on 10th September 2026.

Report received reveals that suspected armed bandits in large numbers invaded and attacked the community at about 1812hrs. Police operatives comprising PMF units, tactical teams and conventional police officers deployed to the area gallantly responded and engaged the attackers in a sustained operation which lasted for seven hours.

The operatives stood firm in defence of the community and successfully repelled the attack, forcing the criminal elements to retreat into the surrounding forest with heavy casualties in the early hours of 11th September 2026.

Regrettably, four police officers paid the supreme price in the course of defending the community. Their bodies were subsequently recovered during search and rescue operations in the surrounding bushes. The corpses of seven civilians were also recovered following the attack and deposited at a mortuary for necessary procedures.

The Commissioner of Police, Benue State Command, CP Cletus C. N. Nwadiogbu, psc(+), mnips, PhD, has commended the courage, resilience and gallantry displayed by the operatives who stood firm in defence of the community. He paid special tribute to the fallen officers who made the ultimate sacrifice in the service of their nation.

The Commissioner of Police also extends his heartfelt condolences to the families of the deceased civilians and the entire Ayilamo Community, assuring them that the Command shares in their grief and remains resolute in its commitment to protecting lives and property.

Meanwhile, additional tactical teams have been mobilised and deployed to the area to reinforce existing security arrangements, while the Command continues to work closely with other security agencies to strengthen security and sustain operations in the affected area.

The Benue State Police Command reassures residents of Ayilamo Community and the people of Benue State that every necessary measure is being taken to protect lives and property. Members of the public are urged to remain calm, vigilant and cooperate with security agencies by providing useful and timely information that can assist ongoing operations.

Governor Alia Receives Letter of Nomination as The Sun's Governor of the Year.

The Management of The Sun newspapers has nominated Rev. Fr. Hyacinth Alia as The Sun Governor of the Year award, 2026

This is even as the Governor said, he is happy to know that his “siren” has blasted beyond Benue state, fetching him such very prestigious recognition by one of the country's credible media outfits.

The Governor explained that he has refused to blast the siren on his convoy since he took over the reins of the state as Governor because he felt the works he is delivering should serve as his siren and not the sounds and cacophony on the road in a convoy.

“Let interventions in creating jobs be my siren; let the roads I am building serves as my siren; let the companies I am building to be my siren and other achievements I have recorded within this time”, he stated.

Presenting the letter of nomination to Governor Alia today at Government House, Makurdi, the Managing Director/Editor-in-Chief of The Sun newspapers, Onuoha Ukeh stated that the choice of Governor Alia was based on merit, especially, looking at his laudable programmes accelerating development in the state.

He pointed out that the total transformation of Makurdi, the state capital; the interventions in the health sector that made the Benue State University Teaching Hospital to become a medical tourist centre, and the unprecedented attention to Primary Healthcare Centres across the state.

Mr. Onuoha further stated that the establishment of the Food Basket Breweries, Bensono fruit juice factory are legacy projects as they will surely predate the tenure of the Governor.

He stated that, “Only someone with a clear vision on how he wants to leave a state after his tenure will indulge in very useful ventures such as the revival of ailing industries like Taraku Mills etc, and Fr. Alia has done this”.

The Benue State Councillors Forum has expressed confidence in the leadership of the Chairman of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON), Benue State Chapter, Rt. Hon. Dr. Shaku Justine Orangoholga, pledging to work closely with him to strengthen grassroots governance across the state.

The forum made its position known on Wednesday when its leadership, led by its Chairman, Hon. Engr. Onoja Sunday Ugwu, paid a solidarity visit to Shaku at the ALGON Guest House in Makurdi.

The visit was aimed at congratulating the Katsina-Ala Local Government Chairman on his emergence as the state ALGON Chairman and to assure him of the forum’s support as he assumes leadership of the association.

Ugwu described Shaku’s emergence as a major boost to grassroots administration, stressing that his background as a former councillor placed him in a unique position to understand the challenges facing councillors and local government communities.

He said Shaku’s previous service as councillor representing Yooyo Council Ward had exposed him to the realities of grassroots politics and governance, adding that the experience would be valuable in his new responsibility as ALGON Chairman.

The forum chairman said the councillors were particularly pleased that one of their former colleagues had risen to lead the umbrella body of local government councils in the state.

He expressed optimism that Shaku would use his position to deepen cooperation between local government chairmen and councillors while promoting accountability, effective representation and development at the grassroots.

The councillors also declared their support for the administration of Governor Rev. Fr. Dr. Hyacinth Iormem Alia, with Ugwu expressing confidence in Shaku’s ability to coordinate grassroots mobilisation for the Governor ahead of the 2027 governorship election.

Responding, Shaku thanked the delegation for the gesture, describing the visit as a demonstration of solidarity and a reminder of the shared responsibility of elected local government officials to deliver good governance to the people.

He assured the councillors that his leadership of ALGON would pursue greater unity and cooperation among local government stakeholders, with particular attention to strengthening the relationship between council executives and legislators.

According to him, local government administration can only achieve meaningful results when elected officials work together, respect their respective constitutional responsibilities and place the interests of the people above personal considerations.

Shaku also pledged to support initiatives aimed at improving the welfare of local government officials, strengthening accountability and accelerating development projects that directly affect rural communities.

He called on the councillors to remain united and committed to their legislative responsibilities, urging them to maintain close contact with their constituents and effectively communicate the needs of their communities to the appropriate authorities.

The ALGON Chairman equally reaffirmed his support for Governor Alia, urging the councillors to join hands with other grassroots stakeholders to consolidate the achievements of the present administration.

He said the 2027 election would require sustained grassroots engagement and urged the councillors to remain organised and united in mobilising support for the Governor.

Dr. Justine Orangoholga Shaku, has called on youths, youth organisations and support groups across the state to participate actively in today’s crucial engagement with the Executive Governor of Benue State, Rev. Fr. Dr. Hyacinth Iormem Alia.

The engagement, scheduled for today, September 8, 2026, at the IBB Square, Makurdi, is expected to bring together critical stakeholders for extensive interaction and dialogue on matters relating to the development, progress and future of Benue State.

Shaku, while welcoming participants to the engagement, described the meeting as a significant opportunity for the youths and various support groups to interface directly with the state government and make meaningful contributions to the development agenda of the administration.
