Navigating Unity Amidst Disagreements: The Complex Landscape of Islamic Scholarship in Southwest Nigeria by Mr Kabiru Adeniyi ADISA FCA

In recent times, the Islamic community in Southwest Nigeria has been marked by a noteworthy, yet disconcerting, trend—an ongoing disagreement among Islamic scholars. This perplexing situation raises questions about the nature of the disagreement, the implications for the Muslim community, and the importance of unity in the practice of Islam.

At the heart of the disagreement are the differences in approach and interpretation between two major groups of Islamic scholars—Alsuna and Sufi. This discordance, though not unique to Southwest Nigeria, has become increasingly pronounced in the region, manifesting in condemnations and criticisms exchanged between the two factions.

Alsuna scholars, known for their adherence to a literal interpretation of Islamic texts, find themselves at odds with Sufi scholars, who incorporate mystical and spiritual dimensions into their practice. While theological differences are expected in any diverse religious community, the intensity of the disagreements has raised concerns among Muslims in the region.

Islam, as a religion, emphasizes unity among its followers. The foundational principles outlined in the Quran and Hadith highlight the importance of harmony and brotherhood within the Muslim community. However, the ongoing discord between Alsuna and Sufi scholars challenges this unity.

Islamic scholars serve as guides for the Muslim community, providing interpretations of religious texts and ethical principles. Despite the theological variances among different Islamic schools of thought, the fundamental belief is that Islam is one. This shared foundation should ideally serve as a unifying force, transcending the differences in interpretation.

The sources of Islamic law, including the Quran, Hadith, Ijma, Qiyas, Ijtihad, Urf, Maslahah, and Sunnah, are meant to guide Muslims in their worship and daily lives. These sources are rich with principles of justice, equity, and mercy, emphasizing the common ground that should bind the Muslim community together.

In the face of these disagreements, the paramount concern for Muslims should be the preservation of unity. While diversity in interpretation is natural, the divisive exchanges between scholars, particularly on social media platforms, suggest a departure from the ideals of scholarly discourse.

Scholars are entrusted with the responsibility of guiding their communities, imparting knowledge, and fostering unity. When disagreements escalate to the point of public condemnation, it signals a departure from the scholarly behavior expected within the Islamic tradition.

As the disagreement among Islamic scholars in South West Nigeria unfolds, Muslims are faced with a challenge that goes beyond theological differences. The call for unity resonates strongly within Islamic teachings, emphasizing the need for Muslims to overcome divisive tendencies and work towards a harmonious coexistence.

It is crucial for scholars to lead by example, demonstrating the principles of respect and understanding even in the face of differing interpretations. By fostering an environment of scholarly discourse rather than condemnation, the Muslim community can navigate these disagreements while upholding the principles that bind them together. In doing so, Southwest Nigeria's Islamic community can exemplify the unity that lies at the core of Islam.
