FOCUS, A PREY TO DISTRACTION.

FIRST TARGET: early morning sidetracks.

I had plans to tackle some assignments and write a chapter this morning. But I woke up to an unpleasant smell wafting from the kitchen and toilet due to a lack of consistent water supply to my apartment.

On a proposed busy Saturday morning, I could not do anything else as the grody odour continued to gain momentum all over the house; I immediately got into cleaning, leaving my earlier schedules behind.

After two and a half hours, I felt exhausted yet fulfilled; seeing the now neat and sparkling home.

SECOND TARGET: The Great Emotional Capture!
Having some rest before the next activity, the 9 O-Clock News aired a story that got my attention. It was about a couple navigating divorce and are in contention over the custody of their three children.

The news stirred feelings of anger within me over the issue of divorce and a deep concern about the children and their future. Immersing myself in the story immediately took away the respite I had earlier begun.

You will agree that these are unavoidable situations in life. I believe this is how our focus often chronically falls prey to distractive circumstances daily.
But let me ask you some questions.

REFLECT
Do you recognize any familiar daily distractions you encounter?
Does the story you've just read relate to the things which frequently encroach into your pre-planned activities?
Do real-life situations capture your emotions and often derail your plans?
How well do you manage things and circumstances which constantly seek your attention in life?

MENTAL AND EMOTIONAL RESOLVE.
To go on with the remaining tasks, I grabbed my jotter and my pen and walked out of the house to stroll around the compound so I could get my thoughts away from the emotionally unpleasant divorce news I had earlier heard.

To be focused and committed to our goals is to train ourselves to become mentally and emotionally robust.

TOPIC: Total Surrender To The Holy Spirit

And if the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead is living in you, he who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through his Spirit, who lives in you. (Rom.8.11 NIV)

When I first started to develop a closer relationship with the Lord and to learn His ways, which I’m still learning, I used to set an alarm so I could wake up in the middle of the night to fellowship with the Lord.

But this desire and goal was far beyond my reach for months even more than a year as I thought I could just create a consistent routine to study the Bible, worship, praise, pray and meditate every night all on my own without understanding the pivotal role the Holy Spirit have to play in helping me achieve this fit.

I continue to struggle, often feel disappointed and sometimes get angry at myself for my inability to be consistent. As I continued, the Lord began to upon my understanding that “without Him, I can do nothing.” I then began to study the person of the Holy Spirit; doing that opened my eyes to grasp the ultimate need for the Holy Spirit and why I must surrender to His rulership over my life.

As I started learning to submit to His leadership and guidance, He began to wake me up even hours before the time I used to set for myself with the alarm.

Many of us live our lives on the assumption that we can do everything by ourselves. We depend on our finite minds and logic. We depend on our education, titles, social connections and achievements.

Unknown to us it is the greatest form of self-destruction. It’s a journey to no destination, trying to lord ourselves. As Children of God, we can manage to discipline and control our attitude and response to life, but not in the absence of the authority of the Holy Spirit. It will end in futility. May that not be our portion in Jesus' Name, Amen.

Have you ever wondered or asked why man lives below the sky or walks on the ground while God is said to live in heaven?
That is because he who creates a thing is greater than what he has made.

Understand that God is the creator and we are the creation. Therefore, we can never be like our maker, it’s a principle. We can only reflect and represent the image, character or nature of our creator to signify our legitimacy as his children.

God sending His Spirit to the earth means that the fullness of Him cannot come down, as the earth is too small to accommodate Him and His entourage. Therefore, it is a great privilege for us to have His Spirit here with us. Constantly dwelling among us. Hence, it would be wise for me and you to take advantage of His presence, submit to Him, and allow Him to lead us aright.

PRAYER/MEDITATION
Holy Spirit of God, thank you for your presence among us, I need you in my life.
From today, I submit my life to your leadership; come help me in Jesus'' Nam, amen.

TOPIC: The Meaning Of God’s Love

Many waters cannot quench love; rivers cannot wash it away. If one were to give all the wealth of his house for love, it would be utterly scorned. (Song.8.7 NIV)

It is no longer news that if the purpose of a thing is not known, understood, or genuinely experienced, the ab-use or abnormal use of that thing cannot be stopped or prevented.

Whatever it may be, that thing will continue to suffer the assault of wrong usage or mis-use. Meaning, we miss the accurate use of a thing when we don’t understand it.

The term love has been a victim of the above misappropriation and tragedy in many relationships for ages, even in our relationship with God, the one who created it.
Simply because we could hardly conceive and understand the purpose or meaning of it, particularly the younger ones.

Have you ever had deep feelings of love for someone or something? Perhaps you went as far as investing your time, energy, and money, even relinquishing your goals and other relationships just to prove your love for the person.

Maybe, the person also loved you back for a while. But in the end, what happened? Possibly you get disappointed, betrayed, abandoned and so on.

If you’ve been in a situation like that, just know that God is with you. He understands that you are still learning to understand how He created Love. That is why sometimes He allows us go through those situations so that we can come to Him and learn what love is and what it is not.

While you’re looking for a partner to love and be loved in return, the love of God through Jesus Christ is just standing by the corner of your house or in front of your doorpost, maybe close to your heart knocking and waiting if you’ll allow Him to come in, even though you’re unaware of His closeness to you.

This is because God’s love is not determined by how He feels about you or how you feel about Him. It is always beside you, open to accept you, even though you don’t feel like accepting it, even though you don’t want it.
The love of God is intentional. God made a decision to be committed to loving us at all times, no matter what.

This is why His Word is telling you and me today that many waters cannot and will never be able to quench his love for us. All we need to do is to turn to Him for love if we desire true love.

PRAYER/MEDITATION
Ever loving Father in heaven, I sincerely desire your love, and I’m willing to know you and love you from today. Help me, Jesus. Amen.

TOPIC: The Secret Doubt In Most Beleiver’s Hearts.

Philip said, "Lord, show us the Father and that will be enough for us."
(Joh 14:8 NIV)

As it was during Jesus’ time on earth over two thousand years ago, so it is today how Christians secretly struggle with doubt in their hearts over the unfailing love and credibility of the story and the person of Jesus Christ of Nazareth.

A particular portion of His account that appears confusing to most unbelievers and even some Christians is the story of Jesus’s birth. That is why Paul the apostle called it a “stumbling block” because even Jesus’ own family could not understand Him.

Philip and Thomas, though they walk side by side with the Lord for about three years, yet they find it hard to truly believe that Jesus is the son of God.

This is exactly what is happening in the lives of most Christians today. Being a consistent churchgoer, serving fervently in the house of God, or being close to our pastors does not give us full assurance of personally knowing, trusting, and truly believing in Jesus, perhaps, because we're not wholesomely transformed.

Contrary to observing routine laws, the gospel of the kingdom of God and the life and story of Jesus Christ is a supernatural mystery orchestrated by the all-knowing wisdom of God.

Hence, a twenty-year-old Christian life void of a personal encounter and understanding of the knowledge of the entirety of the kingdom message is a passive adventure, and perhaps in futility. This is why we silently struggle with doubt and lack the confidence to tell others about Jesus.

Understand that your being available in church does not mean you are present in church. Being present means your mind, heart, body, spirit and soul are committed to an intimate relationship with God and serving only Him both in the Church and in your home.

To know, understand, believe strongly and obey the Lord promptly, we must learn, develop, and get used to having a lovely, intimate fellowship with the Lord daily: in church, at home, and everywhere we are: by studying the Bible, praying, occasionally fasting and telling others about Jesus.

Doing the above lies our faith and doubtless belief in the Lord. Note that in every relationship you have a privilege and a responsibility.

PRAYER/MEDITATION
Dear Lord, thank you for giving me your only Son Jesus Christ. Give me the grace to personally know him so that I may no longer doubt His love for me. Amen.

TOPIC: Learn To Think Right At All Time.

And now, dear brothers and sisters, let me say one more thing as I close this letter. Fix your thoughts on what is true, honourable, and right. Think about things that are pure, lovely, and admirable. Think about things that are excellent and worthy of praise. (Phil 4:8 NLT)

You might say, “In this wicked world and environments where evil people always do wicked things, where we constantly hear bad stories of killing, stilling, hatred, envy, backbiting and so on, how can I fix my mind on things that are true, pure, right, honourable, how can I avoid hearing those bad things?”

A certain young man always complains and feels sad and ashamed about his struggles with a particular negative habit that has affected his financial life. I try to talk him into how he can replace this habit.

But I started noticing that he constantly associates and converses with those who also exhibit the same habit. Not only that he associates with them, but he also frequently follows them, leaving his small business behind to places where they carry out this habit.
I said in my heart that it would be difficult for this young man to change.

It is no longer news that Satan’s oldest and most effective strategy or method of luring God’s children to think wrong and further sin is through distraction in the form of enticement.

He disguises himself under good and pleasurable things to which we are emotionally attracted; then he presents them to his victims in a manner that seems hard to resist, to capture and destroy their glorious destinies.

And some of the means through which he does this is through our closest contacts: friends, family members, colleagues, through the internet and through the movies we watch.

You must have perhaps experienced when a close friend or brother became a nightmare to you. That is because Satan wants you to “think,” and abhor unforgiveness!
Remember, what we put into our minds determines what comes out in our words and actions.

Therefore, if you find yourself struggling with bad thoughts and habits, do not worry.
The Lord has given us His trusted and unfailing Word as a permanent solution to resist and get rid of that demonic stronghold.

Be willing to read and meditate on the scriptures daily and have your mind transformed into thinking only what is true, honourable, right, pure, lovely, and praiseworthy.

PRAYER/MEDITATION
Thank you, Lord, for your infallible Word.
From today, I must consistently study your Word and meditate on it. My mind must be fixed on it, to think only what is true, pure, honest, lovely, good, honourable, excellent and what is admirable in Jesus' Name. Amen.

TOPIC: …Seek Ye First The Kingdom Of God.

But seek (aim at and strive after) first of all His kingdom and His righteousness (His way of doing and being right), and then all these things taken together will be given to you besides. (Matt 6:33 AMP)

I met a Colleague in the office yesterday; he complained bitterly about how he was strategically denied leave to travel to see his family during the just concluded festivities. A month ago, he complained to me that he was not promoted during the last general promotion in the organization.

During our first discussion about his promotion, I asked him why he was not promoted, and he said, “I don’t know.” Then he went further to say, “This is the third time I’m missing this promotion; I went for the promotion exam, I have never committed any offence, I have never been charged, nor punished for any misconduct, but I keep missing promotion.”

Seeing the anxious and disappointed looks on his face, I encouraged him and said, “You will not miss that promotion again, but you need to find out what is behind it, sir.

Fast forward to yesterday morning, he told me that he filled out the leave form and submitted it to the administrative department for the C.O. and Commander to sign. He went back the following day to check if they had signed it so that he could travel to see his family. He was told by the admin personnel that they could no longer find the form.

According to him, he was furious, but he quickly understood that maybe God did not want him to travel, so he became calm. To his surprise, yesterday he was called upon by the same people that they have found the form.

When he was done, I asked him how was his relationship with Jesus, and he scratched his head for a while and said, “I don’t know, but I do go to church sometimes on Sundays. Then, I began to talk to him about the importance of developing and having a personal relationship with God consistently.

In the middle of our discussion, the Holy Spirit moved in our midst and he was convicted; tears filled his eyes, and then I led him to Christ.

We must understand that the lifestyle of God’s kingdom is a daily father-son relationship. And be assured that having such a daily union with the Lord will shade off every limitation that tries to oppose our lives and destiny, like the three times denial of my colleague’s promotion because where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty!

TOPIC: Submit All Plans Into God's Hand.

In all your ways acknowledge Him, And He shall direct your paths. (Prov 3:6, NKJV)

“I have so much to do and accomplish this season, I will not waste any day of my life this time. Every goal and plan I have for this year, I must make sure I achieve them.”

Dearly beloved, it is very easy for you to get caught up with all these sorts of plans. Satan himself is an expert in getting us interwoven and busy with all manner of seemingly good ideas, plans and goals that may not possibly be what God wants for you at times.

But thank God for His grey-headed wisdom which surpasses even satan’s most effective strategy. The wisdom of God tells us that though we might come up with all kinds of profound ideas, only acknowledging the Lord as the source of these ideas is what would make our journey towards achieving them straightforward and without detours because the devil also often presents us with his own ideas.

If we refuse to surrender or submit our daily, weekly, monthly, yearly and even decade-long plans to the Lord, we might likely embark on a journey of trials and error, break failures, disappointments and setbacks. May we not be too proud to acknowledge the sovereignty of God over our lives and goals in Jesus Name, Amen.🙏🏾

PRAYER/MEDITATION
Thank you, Lord, for the gift of vision you gave to me, that I may join you in making heavenly plans to influence the earth. Give me the Spirit of wisdom, faith and obedience to submit all my plans to your authority. In Jesus' Name, Amen.

TOPIC: Begin With The Wisdom Of God!

"The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, but fools despise wisdom and instruction." (Pro 1:7 NIV)

A new beginning has been presented to us once more, with fresh starts.😇 Perhaps, feelings of high optimism and enthusiasm, fuelled by our deepest desires, plans, goals, and wants, as well as cravings for the new year.

For some people: their goal is to acquire or build a real estate, while for others, it can be buying a car or cars, travelling abroad, getting married, going back to school, it may be self-development or even getting to know God personally and better for you and me, it can be getting a new job and a better apartment, changing the location or city in which you’ve lived the previous year.

Truly, all these are worthwhile desires and goals. Certainly, some of us have already penned down most of these goals with the popular idea of "new year's resolution." From a positive viewpoint, it is a good idea for quick reminder and to keep a track record of what we want out of the new year, what we have achieved, and what we're yet to accomplish.

But, from God's perspective, how to begin a new phase in our lives, is to seek His ever-winning wisdom! According to His Word our anchor scripture for today.

We also learned in the same book which taught as that "The Lord brought me forth as the first of His works, before His deeds of old." (Pro 8:22 NIV)

Therefore, in all that we've set out to achieve this year, the Lord wants and He is advising you and I to seek His Wisdom, first, which will guarantee our safety, peace and joy as we tread through various paths, and give us full assurance of success in every area of our lives during the year, rather than our limited human logic or reasoning that will eventually and surely come to nought!

PRAYER/MEDITATION
Dear Lord, I thank you for releasing the Spirit of your divine wisdom into my heart. Give me the grace to take responsibility to diligently learn and apply your wisdom to my life every day, starting from this moment and throughout the year, in Jesus Christ's Name, Amen!
