SUNDAY SCHOOL HYMN

1 O Sunday School, on the Lord's day,
O how I love Thee well,
I am happy, it makes me glad
To rejoice at Thy birth.

2 O Sunday School, on the Lord's day,
Thy friendship suits me well,
Both young and old will sing Thy song,
We long for Sunday School.

3 O Sunday School, on the Lord's day,
Christ was Thy first teacher,
The Holy Spirit, great teacher,
Does manifest in thee.

4 O Sunday School, on the Lord's day,
This testimony is sure,
That God, the Father Almighty,
Poured His blessing on Thee.

5 O Sunday School, on the Lord's day,
Though the sun be so bright,
Or if the clouds be black with rain,
I'll be in Sunday School.

6 O Sunday School, on the Lord's day,
I rejoice to see Thee,
Will thou pass over me today?
Without my being blest?

OPENING PRAYER:
Father, please help me to know my responsibility to widows and single parents.

BIBLE PASSAGE: GENESIS 21:9-19.

[9] And Sarah saw the son of Hagar the Egyptian, whom she had borne to Abraham, scoffing.

[10] Therefore she said to Abraham, “Cast out this bondwoman and her son; for the son of this bondwoman shall not be heir with my son, namely with Isaac.”

[11] And the matter was very displeasing in Abraham’s sight because of his son.

[12] But God said to Abraham, “Do not let it be displeasing in your sight because of the lad or because of your bondwoman. Whatever Sarah has said to you, listen to her voice; for in Isaac your seed shall be called.

[13] Yet I will also make a nation of the son of the bondwoman, because he is your seed.”

[14] So Abraham rose early in the morning, and took bread and a skin of water; and putting it on her shoulder, he gave it and the boy to Hagar, and sent her away. Then she departed and wandered in the Wilderness of Beersheba.

[15] And the water in the skin was used up, and she placed the boy under one of the shrubs.

[16] Then she went and sat down across from him at a distance of about a bowshot; for she said to herself, “Let me not see the death of the boy.” So she sat opposite him, and lifted her voice and wept.

[17] And God heard the voice of the lad. Then the angel of God called to Hagar out of heaven, and said to her, “What ails you, Hagar? Fear not, for God has heard the voice of the lad where he is.

[18] Arise, lift up the lad and hold him with your hand, for I will make him a great nation.”

[19] Then God opened her eyes, and she saw a well of water. And she went and filled the skin with water, and gave the lad a drink.

MEMORY VERSE:
"A father of the fatherless, and a judge of the widows, is God in his holy habitation." Psalm 68:5.

INTRODUCTION
A single parent is a parent without a marriage partner, widowed, separated, deserted, divorced or never married; one who is in charge of his or her household. The reason for becoming a single parent is diverse. For some, it is a deliberate desire/preference while other situations such as single-person adoption, unwanted pregnancy, r**e, etc. force others into it. Widowhood is the state of a man or a woman whose spouse is dead. On some occasions, the experiences of both single parents and widows/widowers are quite similar. God, therefore, commands us to protect these people in our churches and communities (Exodus 22:22).

TEXT REVIEW: GENESIS 21:9-19

This passage narrates the story of Hagar, Sarah's maid and her son. It highlights the reason Hagar became a single parent, her experience in the wilderness and God's reaction to her situation. Identify the cause, her experience and God's intervention as recorded in the passage.

A. The cause: ................................

B. Her experiences:

i. She wandered in the wilderness of Beersheba
ii. ..........................................
iii. .........................................

C. God's intervention:

GOD'S DISPOSITION

The Teacher should explain God's disposition to single parents and widows as follows:

1 God is highly concerned about single parents and widows/widowers.

2 He is the Father to the fatherless and the protector of widows (Psalm 68:5).

3 God does not want them to be afflicted or treated badly. He hears them when they cry. God says anyone who maltreats them may invite his wrath (Exodus 22:22-24). To maltreat could be to neglect, abuse or take advantage of.

4 God wants us to defend them (Isaiah 1:17).

5 He sustains and relieves widows (Psalm 146:9).

6 God makes provisions for them in His law (Deuteronomy 10:18; 26:12-13).

7 He preserves the fatherless children and expects widows to trust Him (Jeremiah 49:11).

CLASS ACTIVITY 1
Should the cause of single parenthood or widowhood be a determinant factor in how they are treated?

OUR RESPONSIBILITY

A. Irrespective of the cause, single parents and widows/widowers should be treated with love and acceptance.

i. Provision of a support system such as financing the repair of properties/belongings, giving scholarships for the children's education, welfare support, etc. will go a long way in helping widows and/or single parents live a better life.

ii. Sharing words of encouragement via text messages or phone calls will provide emotional stability.

B. Encourage single parents and the widowed to discover/fulfil their purpose from God's viewpoint.

i. Provide an environment for single parents and the widowed to learn skills that can help them sustain and provide for themselves and their children.

ii. Help them to develop a close relationship with God who can heal them from wounds, bitterness and resentment they might be experiencing.

iii. Family members are enjoined to take care of them so that they will not suffer. This is seen as proof of commitment to God (Matthew 25:34-40).

iv. The widowed and children of single parents should not be abused, stigmatised or enslaved but should be helped (James 1:27; Galatians 6:10).

CLASS ACTIVITY 2
Why are single parents stigmatised? Discuss.

CONCLUSION
The church should be a family of faith, a real community where burdens are shared, friendships are formed and support is given as we journey in faith together.

CLOSING PRAYER
Father, let me be a support and strength to the weak and everyone around me in Jesus' name.

ASSIGNMENT
1 Project: Sunday school classes at the Parish level should contribute money or materials (as the Lord provides) to support the widows, widowers, single parents and their children. Those who contribute should be prayed for by the Pastor.
2 Mention ten (10) things you can give to support widows, widowers, single parents and their children. (1x10=10 Marks).

MEMORISE:
And whatever you do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through Him. Colossians 3:17

BIBLE READING: 1 CORINTHIANS 8:9-11

9 But take heed lest by any means this liberty of your's become a stumblingblock to them that are weak.

10 For if any man see thee which hast knowledge sit at meat in the idol's temple, shall not the conscience of him which is weak be emboldened to eat those things which are offered to idols;

11 And through thy knowledge shall the weak brother perish, for whom Christ died?

MESSAGE:
A representative is someone who speaks for or acts on behalf of another person. Being a representative of Christ means living the life of Christ. As a representative of Christ, you should possess the fruit of the Spirit, and this should be evident in your relationship with others.

As Christ's representative, you must ensure that you show love to everyone around you. You must also be patient and joyful at all times. Let your actions, words, appearance, association, and everything about you truly reflect Christ. When unbelievers see you, they should see Jesus.

My dear child, your lifestyle will tell whether you are truly a representative of Christ or not. Therefore, I admonish you to live a life that will lead unbelievers to Christ. People should desire to turn away from the world and come to Jesus because of the way you live. Let others see Jesus in you.

REFLECTION:
Are you truly representing Christ?

OPENING PRAYER:
Dear Lord, teach me how to relate with homosexuals.

BIBLE PASSAGE: Ezekiel 33:11-15 (NKJV)
[11]Say to them: ‘As I live,’ says the Lord God, ‘I have no pleasure in the death of the wicked, but that the wicked turn from his way and live. Turn, turn from your evil ways! For why should you die, O house of Israel?’ The Fairness of God’s Judgment
[12]“Therefore you, O son of man, say to the children of your people: ‘The righteousness of the righteous man shall not deliver him in the day of his transgression; as for the wickedness of the wicked, he shall not fall because of it in the day that he turns from his wickedness; nor shall the righteous be able to live because of his righteousness in the day that he sins.’
[13]When I say to the righteous that he shall surely live, but he trusts in his own righteousness and commits iniquity, none of his righteous works shall be remembered; but because of the iniquity that he has committed, he shall die.
[14]Again, when I say to the wicked, ‘You shall surely die,’ if he turns from his sin and does what is lawful and right,
[15]if the wicked restores the pledge, gives back what he has stolen, and walks in the statutes of life without committing iniquity, he shall surely live; he shall not die.

MEMORY VERSE:
"If a man lies with a male as he lies with a woman, both of them have committed an abomination. They shall surely be put to death. Their blood shall be upon them." Leviticus 20:13 (NKJV).

INTRODUCTION: Having explained homosexuality and the biblical stand about it, we shall ex-amine the dangers involved and believers' dispo-sition to homosexuals.

LESSON AIM: To teach students the dangers of and believers' disposition to homosexuality.

TEACHING OBJECTIVES: At the end of this lesson, students should be able to:
a. Understand the dangers of homosexuality.
b. Explain believers' disposition to homosexuals.

TEXT REVIEW: Ezekiel 33:11-15.
This passage is proof of God's fairness in judge-ment but most importantly, of his ability to forgive and never bring to remembrance past sins matter how great they may be when a sinner repents.

It suggests that what counts for life or death at the end is the side a person is found either on the side of righteousness or the side of sin. Every other thing is history and insignificant.

LESSON OUTLINE
LESSON OUTLINE 1: THE DANGERS INVOLVED
The Scripture mentions that this sexual pervasion will result in abandonment from God and the hardening of the perpetrator's heart (Romans 1:28).
i. God will give them over to continue in things that are 'not convenient' i.e. 'not becoming' 'inap-propriate' 'shameful'.

ii. As a result, they can no longer see the effects of their wrongdoings (Proverbs 10:17; Proverbs 14:12).

iii. Without an awareness of their sinfulness, there will be no repentance (2 Corinthians 4:3-4).

iv. Without repentance, there will be no forgive-ness (Acts 8:22).

v. Without forgiveness, there is no salvation (2 Corinthians 7:10; Romans 10:10).

CLASS ACTIVITY 1: Can anyone already aban-doned by God be saved?

LESSON OUTLINE 2: CHRISTIANS' DISPOSITION
A. Christians are called to demonstrate the love of Christ towards all, including homosexuals (Matthew 22:39).
i. Homosexuality is a sin and like any other sin, it needs to be laid at the cross and repented of (Romans 6:6; Ephesians 4:22-24).

ii. Christians should pray for the salvation of ho-mosexuals the same way they would any other person in sin (1 Timothy 2:1; James 5:16).

iii. They should treat homosexuals with the same dignity as they would anyone else because they are also made in the image of God (1 Peter 2:17a; Genesis 1:27).

iv. However, this does not mean that Christians should approve of their sin (Ephesians 5:11; 1Timothy 5:22b).

B. Although, our society does not rely on the Bible for its moral truth but on humanistic and rel-ativistic morals upon which it builds its ethical structure, the Bible, of course, condemns homo-sexuality (Leviticus 18:22, 20:13).
i. It takes no 'leap of logic' to discern that homo-sexual marriage is also condemned.

ii. Therefore, every Christian and the church at large must continue to speak the truth in love and pray for sinners until they come to the knowledge of Christ (Ephesians 4:15).

CLASS ACTIVITY 2: Students should spend some time to pray for the salvation of homosexuals.

3. CONCLUSION: Let the love of Christ flow through you so that sinners can see true love and turn to Christ.

EVALUATION: The students should mention at least three ways they will relate with homosexuals to win them over.

CLOSING PRAYER: Dear Lord, please help me to play my role in showing homosexuals Christ's love and His saving grace.

ASSIGNMENT: Highlight five (5) practical steps you will take to help homosexuals around you repent (1x10=10 Marks).

Bible Text: Galatians 6:7-9
[7]Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap.
[8]For he that soweth to his flesh shall of the flesh reap corruption; but he that soweth to the Spirit shall of the Spirit reap life everlasting.
[9]And let us not be weary in well doing: for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not.

Matthew 25:26-30
[26]His lord answered and said unto him, Thou wicked and slothful servant, thou knewest that I reap where I sowed not, and gather where I have not strawed:
[27]Thou oughtest therefore to have put my money to the exchangers, and then at my coming I should have received mine own with usury.
[28]Take therefore the talent from him, and give it unto him which hath ten talents.
[29]For unto every one that hath shall be given, and he shall have abundance: but from him that hath not shall be taken away even that which he hath.
[30]And cast ye the unprofitable servant into outer darkness: there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth.

In 1 Samuel 17, for 40 days, Israelites were waiting for solution to Goliath's threat, in Exodus 14 same Israelites were waiting for redemption from Egyptians following them and Red Sea impeding their progress, so men have always being depending on God's children for solution to their problems and in offering that solution, God is glorified and also receives His returns on investing in His children.
