Subject: Notice of Peaceful Protest by Ikirun Youth
Dear Sir,
Reference is made to our earlier letter dated 27th January 2025, where we highlighted critical issues affecting our community as a result of your company’s operations in Ikirun.
Despite all efforts to resolve these matters amicably, it is evident from your company’s response and body language that there is no genuine commitment toward addressing the issues raised.
Consequently, the youth of Ikirun have resolved to embark on a peaceful protest at your company premises starting from 29th September 2025, and this action will continue until a concrete resolution is reached with top Ikirun stakeholders.
For the record, we wish to remind your management of the following concerns:
1. Air Pollution: Your company’s activities continue to endanger the lives of our people and pose a serious threat to our farmlands.
2. Community Neglect: Despite operating in Ikirun for over 15 years as a multinational company, there is no verifiable record of any corporate social responsibility (CSR) project or tangible support to the host community.
3. Security Concerns: The presence of scavengers and certain categories of workers employed around your premises has increased insecurity. We recall with pain the 2016 armed robbery incident that shut down banks in Ikirun till today, in which one of your workers was identified among the perpetrators.
4. Employment & Welfare: No Ikirun indigene is represented at the management level in your company. Our people are restricted to casual labour, and even at that, many have suffered injuries at work due to inadequate personal protective equipment (PPE). Such victims have been abandoned without medical care, insurance, or due compensation.
5. Neglect of Host Community Rights: By the Nigerian Constitution, host communities are entitled to benefits and dependency support from companies operating in their locality. Prism Steel Mills has consistently failed to honour this responsibility.
Since inception, our community has shown maximum tolerance and support for your operations in Ikirun. However, our peaceful and accommodating nature must not be taken for granted.
For prompt assurance of a peaceful protest, kindly note that all relevant bodies and security agencies copied in our previous letter are also in copy of this correspondence.
