🚨 BREAKING NEWS: LAGOS DECLARES WASTE MANAGEMENT EMERGENCY.
Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has declared what he described as a “small state of emergency” on waste management following growing challenges with refuse collection and disposal across the state.
The Governor made the declaration today, September 9, 2026, during an inspection of the Olusosun dumpsite in Ojota, where he assessed the immediate challenges affecting waste operations.
♻️ KEY MEASURES ANNOUNCED
160 new compactor trucks are to be procured to strengthen waste collection.
Olusosun dumpsite capacity will be increased from about 250–350 trucks daily to 350–450 trucks.
The number of active tipping points will be increased to improve truck turnaround.
The government plans to develop four active waste sites within about six weeks, with a fifth site at Erikitte, Badagry.
Two major 2,400-tonne transfer loading stations are planned for Olusosun and Solu 3.
Material recovery facilities are being developed at Oke-Osho, Epe and Erikitte, Badagry.
LAWMA and the government will review PSP operators to ensure only capable operators remain in the system.
Governor Sanwo-Olu also appealed to Lagos residents to pay their waste-management bills and stop indiscriminate dumping, stressing that government and residents must work together to restore a cleaner Lagos.
