This Morning, 28/09/2024: An Update from Our NGO Regarding the Incident at Alausa Police Station.
Earlier today, our NGO was alerted regarding the arrest of four women who were apprehended early in the morning while returning from a party. Without any formal statement, they were accused of prostitution and detained at Alausa Police Station.
Despite their explanations about their whereabouts, the police demanded ₦10,000 from each woman, totaling ₦40,000. When a relative of one of the women arrived to bail them out, the police requested an additional ₦200,000—₦50,000 per person.
At this point, we were contacted, as the women could not afford to pay the exorbitant bail fee. I was under the impression that bail is free in Nigeria, so why were they being asked for money?
We immediately reached out to the Lagos State Police Command Public Relations Officer (PPRO), who liaised with the Divisional Police Officer (DPO). Following this intervention, the women were released, and Inspector Ola refunded all the money that had been collected.
We extend our gratitude to Lagos State Police Command PPRO and DPO CSP Abimbola Abaniwonda for their swift actions in ensuring justice was served.
