Calls for Urgent Action on Insecurity and Respect for Yoruba Traditional Institutions

The Forum for Yoruba Unity and Progress (FYUP) expresses grave concern and outrage over the worsening state of insecurity across Yoruba land and the continued neglect of critical issues affecting our people.

At a time when lives are being lost, communities are under threat, and fear is becoming a daily reality, it is unacceptable that attention is being diverted toward **political endorsements and ceremonial activities** instead of confronting the urgent security crisis facing our region.

FYUP states clearly: **this is not the time for political positioning — it is a time for leadership, courage, and action.**

Equally disturbing is the long-standing injustice against Yoruba traditional rulers in Kwara State, particularly the Obas of Jebba and Shao, who have reportedly endured **years of deprivation, non-recognition, and denial of entitlements** for refusing to compromise their traditional identity.

This is not only unjust — it is an attack on the dignity, heritage, and autonomy of the Yoruba traditional institution.

We reject in totality any system where Yoruba Obas are subjected to punishment, neglect, or suppression for standing on their cultural and historical identity.

FYUP therefore issues the following demands:

* The South West Traditional Council must **rise beyond symbolic relevance and demonstrate real leadership** by speaking out and taking decisive action on issues affecting Yoruba monarchs and the security of our people
* The Kwara State Government must **immediately address and rectify all injustices**, including the restoration of salaries, recognition, and full rights of affected Yoruba Obas
* The Federal Government must **ensure fairness, justice, and protection of traditional institutions** across Nigeria without bias or political influence
* All Yoruba leaders and stakeholders must **prioritize the protection of lives and communities above political alignments**

Let it be known: **the continued silence, inaction, and misplaced priorities in the face of insecurity and injustice are unacceptable.**

History will not be kind to those who chose comfort, ceremony, and politics over the safety and dignity of their people.

The Yoruba people deserve protection. The Yoruba institution deserves respect. Justice must be done.

**The time for action is now.**

FYUP Calls for Coordinated Security Action, Urges Unity Among Yoruba Leaders

The Forum for Yoruba Unity and Progress (FYUP) has called for urgent and coordinated action to address the growing insecurity across Yoruba land, urging stronger collaboration among traditional rulers, stakeholders, and security institutions.

In a statement issued on March 21, 2026, the organization emphasized the need for a unified and strategic approach, noting that fragmented efforts can no longer address the scale of security challenges facing communities in the region.

FYUP specifically appealed to the Aare Ona Kakanfo of Yorubaland, Iba Gani Adams, to facilitate broader coordination among Yoruba traditional rulers (Obas), elder statesmen, and organized security networks in order to build a common front against insecurity.

The group noted that while several security conferences and initiatives have been held in the past, the priority now should be the implementation of resolutions already reached, to ensure tangible impact across affected communities.

The organization also called for formal engagement with the Nigeria Police Force, including collaboration with the Inspector-General of Police, to strengthen lawful coordination between community-based security structures and national security agencies.

Furthermore, FYUP urged key stakeholders to promote unity and reconciliation, stressing that political differences should not undermine collective efforts to safeguard lives and property.

In addition, FYUP emphasized that as the Federal Government moves toward the establishment of State Police, it is important that key foundational structures are put in place to ensure effectiveness, accountability, and professionalism. These include clear legal frameworks, operational guidelines, proper funding mechanisms, training standards, and safeguards against abuse.

According to the statement, “This is a defining moment that requires unity, strategic leadership, and decisive action. The safety of our people and the stability of our communities must remain paramount.”

FYUP reaffirmed its commitment to advocating for security reforms, regional stability, and the protection of Yoruba lives and heritage.

IN HONOUR OF CHIEF OBAFEMI AWOLOWO (1909–1987)

The Forum for Yoruba Unity and Progress (FYUP) joins millions of Nigerians and the global Yoruba community in remembering and celebrating the enduring legacy of Chief Obafemi Awolowo, born 6 March 1909.

Chief Awolowo remains one of the most visionary leaders in Nigeria’s history and a towering figure in the political and intellectual development of the Yoruba people. As Premier of the old Western Region, his administration introduced transformative policies such as free education, rural development programmes, and modern healthcare initiatives, which significantly improved the lives of millions.

His leadership demonstrated that visionary governance, discipline, and investment in human development are the foundation of societal progress.

Chief Awolowo stood for integrity, intellectual depth, and unwavering commitment to the advancement of his people. His ideas on federalism, self-reliance, and good governance continue to influence national discourse today.

As an organization committed to unity, security reform, and the progress of Yoruba land, FYUP remains inspired by the principles and values he championed.

His legacy continues to remind us that true leadership is measured by the lasting impact it leaves on society.

FYUP COMMENDS NEW IGP, CALLS FOR URGENT ACTION ON STATE POLICE

The Forum for Yoruba Unity and Progress (FYUP) congratulates the newly confirmed Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, and wishes him success in leading the Nigeria Police Force at this critical time.

We welcome the renewed national conversation on State Police, which aligns with the position earlier adopted by FYUP during our Emergency Meeting on February 18, 2026.

Nigeria’s security challenges require bold reforms. Decentralized policing and stronger community-based security structures are now necessary.

FYUP therefore calls on the House of Representatives and the Senate to urgently fast-track the constitutional amendment process for the establishment of State Police.

Nigeria cannot afford further delay in implementing reforms that will strengthen security and protect our communities.
