🌟 ADVANCING WOMEN’S INCLUSION IN LEADERSHIP & POLITICAL PROCESSES IN NIGERIA 🌟
FIDA Nigeria, Oyo State Branch, driving the call for gender equity in governance!
FIDA Nigeria, under the auspices of the Advance Women Political Participation Project titled “Advancing Women’s Inclusion and Representation in Leadership and Political Processes in Nigeria,” recently held a powerful series of Advocacy/Town Hall Meetings aimed at building consensus and consolidating memoranda to be submitted tothe Constitutional Reform Committee during the forthcoming Zonal Public Hearings.
The activity was implemented across the three Senatorial Districts of Oyo State: Oyo Central, Oyo South, and Oyo North.
📢 This transformative initiative is supported by UN Women and funded by the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) of the United Kingdom Government.
It is being carried out across nine focal states of the federation:
📍 Anambra, Enugu (South East)
📍Edo (South South)
📍 Oyo (South West)
📍 Kogi (North Central)
📍 Adamawa (North East)
📍 Sokoto, Kano, and Jigawa (North West)
👥 Key stakeholders in attendance included:
Hon. Dr. Comforter Adeniyi-Olajide – Oyo State House of Assembly, Ibadan North Constituency 1
Hon. Olubisi Oluranti Michael – Ogbomosho North
Musibau Adetunbi, SAN – Judicial Service Commission Member
Dr. Ademola Ebeloku – Rector, Federal Polytechnic Ile-Oluji
Traditional rulers, government officials, civil society leaders, religious leaders, NURTW, NLC, Trade Union Congress, Market Unions FOMWAN, ASUU, NLC, media outlets (NTtv, Telegraph, Dominion TV), community leaders, women leaders, and other stakeholders from across Oyo State.
🔥 A standout moment was the “HeForShe” Champion Session!
Across the state, approximately 70 men signed up as HeForShe Male Champions, boldly declaring their commitment to women’s political participation.
In addition, 30 men at the senatorial district level also lent their voices and signatures to the cause — showing that true gender inclusion must be embraced and advanced by all.
These champions spoke with passion and purpose, endorsing the Reserved Seats Bill, and advocating for fair and equitable opportunities for women in leadership.
⚖️ The call is clear:
As Nigeria’s constitution undergoes review, there is a collective demand for reserved seats for women — including a mandatory one female Senator from each of the 36 states and the FCT. This is a critical and long-overdue step toward building inclusive and representative governance.
💜 FIDA Nigeria, Oyo State Branch remains committed to amplifying women’s voices and pushing for real political transformation. The journey continues until equity becomes policy and representation becomes reality.
