“Madam, please leave that one. I’ll take this.”
Kunle reached across the table and moved one of the plates closer to himself.
Chioma looked at him. “You said you weren't hungry.”
“I wasn't,” Kunle replied with a grin. “But this one smells too good to ignore.”
Chioma laughed. “So after all that, you're still going to add something to it?”
Kunle glanced at the small container beside the plate.
“Just a little. The food needs more taste.”
Chioma didn't argue. She simply watched as he reached for it.
What happened next seemed like such a small, ordinary thing that neither of them thought much about it.
But sometimes, the habits we barely notice at the dining table can have a much bigger meaning for our health.
🧂 AND THIS IS WHERE WE NEED TO TALK ABOUT SALT.
Many people taste their food, decide that the salt isn't enough, and simply add more directly to the plate.
The concern isn't that salt suddenly becomes dangerous because it is added after cooking.
The bigger concern is the TOTAL amount of sodium you consume throughout the day.
Your body needs sodium for normal functions, but regularly consuming too much sodium can contribute to increased blood pressure and, over time, increase the risk of cardiovascular and kidney problems.
And here's something many people overlook:
The salt you add at the table may be only one part of your total daily sodium intake.
Processed and packaged foods can also contribute significant amounts of sodium to your diet.
Think about foods such as:
🍜 Instant noodles
🥓 Processed meats
🍞 Some breads and baked products
🥫 Canned and packaged foods
🍟 Fast foods and restaurant meals
🧂 Salty snacks and seasoning products
So, what can you do?
✅ Taste your food before adding extra salt.
✅ Gradually reduce the amount of salt you use.
✅ Check food labels when buying packaged foods.
✅ Eat more fresh, minimally processed foods.
✅ Use herbs, spices, garlic, ginger, onions and other flavourful ingredients to make meals enjoyable without relying heavily on salt.
And here's the good news:
You don't have to make your food tasteless to reduce your sodium intake. Your taste preferences can gradually adapt to less salty foods.
