The ‘Palliative care Initiative, Nigeria’ (PCIN), launched in March 2003 to specifically address the issue of holistic care for cancer patients ( i.e. addressing pain and symptom control, psychosocial, spiritual and bereavement support for both patients and their families) through a multidisciplinary approach, metamorphosed into Center for Palliative Care, Nigeria (CPCN) in October, 2005. for Palliative Care, Nigeria (CPCN) is a non- governmental and not- for- profit organization, based in Ibadan, Oyo State. The Centre, since inception, has been collaborating with University College Hospital, (UCH) Ibadan, University of Ibadan, and other national / international organizations. The need for palliative care services has only recently been recognized in Nigeria and the effort to create awareness, develop palliative care services at all levels, train health care providers on palliative care in the country, and include pain and palliative care in the curriculum of health care workers is ongoing.
