2026 INTERNATIONAL LITERACY DAY
On this year's International Literacy day, Tuesday 8 September, we are joining stakeholders all over the world to amplify the importance of literacy for people, the planet and prosperity (3Ps)

Thereafter, we will feature a 2 weeks special community book reading and swapings, and also we are volunteering to tutor new readers for 3 months in all our learning centres.

We are showcasing our past learners' reading skills who had graduated from Basic and Advance Classes.

This year marks 60th Anniversary of the Global Observances of the International Literacy Day and we are not sparing anything to ensure our organisation duly observe it.

Oyo State Non-Profit Organisations
Engage EFCC/SCUML

The NPOs in Oyo State were summoned to a roundtable discussion on Risk Management, Financial Compliance and Transparency to remove lapses in the financial management leading to financial crimes such as money laundering, non compliance with financial regulations and issues with transparency and so on.

Over thirty NPOs across different causes and thematic focuses were in attendance, including our organisation, Centre for Support of Women in Unpaid and Informal Employment in Nigeria (WIIEN).

The key discussions centered on
understanding Non- Profit Organisations (NPOs) and risk exposure: The discussion explained the different categories of NPOs and the importance of identifying organisations that may be more exposed to money laundering and terrorism financing risks.

- FATF Recommendation 8: Emphasis was placed on understanding the requirements and ensuring that measures are applied appropriately to NPOs without unnecessarily restricting legitimate charitable activities.

- Transparency and accountability: NPOs were encouraged to maintain proper records of their activities, finances, donors, and beneficiaries, and to ensure that their operations can be clearly explained and accounted for.

- Donor legitimacy: The discussion highlighted the importance of knowing who provides funds to an organisation and taking reasonable steps to establish that donations come from legitimate sources.

- Financial reporting and compliance: The meeting addressed reporting obligations, including the importance of understanding the applicable thresholds and submitting required reports through the appropriate channels.

- Registration and regulatory responsibilities: Participants were encouraged to understand their obligations and make use of the relevant regulatory platforms and guidance available to them.

- Practical guidance: The facilitators explained that compliance should not be seen merely as a burden, but as a way of protecting organisations, their beneficiaries, donors, and the communities they serve.

The takeaways:
Transparency builds trust. Organisations should be able to explain how they receive and use funds.
Compliance is a continuous responsibility. It requires proper documentation, regular review, and adherence to applicable requirements.

Knowing your donors matters. Organisations should take reasonable steps to understand the legitimacy of their funding sources.

Risk management protects charitable work. Identifying and addressing risks helps ensure that legitimate activities are not misused.

Learning is ongoing. Participants were encouraged to ask questions, seek clarification, and continue improving their knowledge.

Conclusion
The meeting was a great opportunity for stakeholders to gain better understanding of regulatory expectations and the role of NPOs in promoting transparency and accountability. It also reinforced the need for organisations to operate responsibly, maintain proper records, and remain committed to protecting the integrity of their activities.
We learn daily, and there is always room to improve.

Public Hearing on the Oyo State Unplanned and Unsafe Abortion (Prevention and Regulation) Bill, 2025 held at the House of Chiefs, Oyo State House of Assembly, Ibadan, on Wednwsday 24 June, 2026

The issue of unplanned pregnancy and unsafe abortion remains a major public health concern across the world and Nigeria is not exempted. Every year, many young girls and women face unplanned pregnancies that disrupt their education, careers, family life and future aspirations. In many cases, fear, stigma, lack of information, poverty and limited access to support services push some women and girls towards unsafe abortion practices. The consequences are often several, resulting in avoidable injuroes, infecrions and infertility, emotional trauma and sadly, loss of lives.

The Bill intends to provide a framework for Prevention, awareness, education, counseling, support services, regulation and appropriate Monitoringechanisms aimed at reducing the incidences of unplanned pregnancied and unsafe abortion.

In attendance were stakeholders, development expect, professional bodies, civil society organisations, religious institutions, traditional leaders, women and youth groups, and members of the public.

🎉 This year, domestic workers celebrate 15 years of ILO Convention 189 (C189), a landmark achievement that transformed the recognition and rights of domestic workers around the world. They continue to demand that countries ratify ILO Convention 189 so ALL domestic workers can have their rights protected.

Domestic workers provide essential services that are necessary for maintaining households and ensuring the wellbeing of families and communities, playing a central role in supporting the care needs of millions of people.

Still, most domestic work is informal: in many countries, domestic workers are completely excluded from labour law and social security protections.

On International Domestic Workers Day, we recognize domestic workers' invaluable contributions to our communities and demand the recognition of their work. International labour standards and national legislation are crucial to improving the working conditions and upholding the labour rights of domestic workers. For example, C189 recognizes domestic workers’ rights to:

⚬ A written employment contract;
⚬ Decent working conditions;
⚬ Workplace safety and health;
⚬ Social security;
⚬ The power to make complaints against employers.
