Yesterday, 11th March, we closed out our final community townhall in Abaji. We’ve been doing this across communities, making sure the people this campaign is actually for are in the room. Abaji was no different. Government officials, community members, women, youth, persons with disabilities were all present in this conversation.

What came through, again, was that people want to work, learn, and build something. But access has always been the problem.

The townhall ended with key stakeholders signing commitment cards. We have them and will follow up to make sure those commitments move forward.

The trending bridal designer horror stories exposed the weak systems that are common in the sector. An industry can’t scale on vibes, this is why frameworks like Nigerian Skills Qualifications Framework exists.

Our final townhall meeting holds in Abaji on 11th March, the focus remains on the National Skills Qualification Framework (NSQF) and the growing importance of skills in today’s economy.

Just like other townhalls, this is also an opportunity for community members, artisans, youth, and stakeholders to learn more about how skills can be assessed, certified, and positioned for better opportunities.

Today, we draw the curtains on the Skills O’Clock Radio Show as our Head of Operations, Emediong Jerry, speaks on the way forward for the National Skills Qualifications Framework (NSQF).

The Skills O’Clock Radio Show ran for five weeks as part of the Employment Advocacy for Rural Youth Project. One of the key lessons that has stood out for us is how limited access to information continues to prevent millions of Nigerians from benefiting from government initiatives.

While the radio show comes to an end, the conversation around the NSQF, skills acquisition, and recognition does not. It continues in our final townhall in Abaji and across our social media platforms through the Skills Not Risks campaign.

Stay tuned for the rollout in the coming days.

Our fourth townhall was held on Thursday, 12th February in Kuje. A key part of the conversation focused on the reality that the government cannot provide white collar jobs for everyone. For many young people who do not want to wait endlessly, skill acquisition remains a practical and immediate path.

A person with a disability asked the Coordinator of the Department of Mass Education in Kuje about the availability of programmes for people with disabilities. The coordinator confirmed that such programmes exist, though not all skills are suitable for everyone, citing carpentry as an example.

The CEO of Stonebuilt Global Concept Limited spoke about the power of information for young people who want to grow and strengthen their skills. Mrs Rose Chioma, representing the Federal Ministry of Education, also emphasised the importance of information and networking, noting that skills alone are not enough without access and connection. This echoed the focus of Episode 8 of the Skills O’Clock Radio Show, which explores how access to information expands participation in government skills initiatives.

The townhall closed on a practical note when the CEO of Stonebuilt offered a young participant who runs a cleaning business the opportunity to clean newly built flats.
