๐๐ง๐ญ๐ซ๐จ๐๐ฎ๐๐ญ๐ข๐จ๐ง: In the last chapter of Joshua, the people agreed again to serve God. Joshua, their leader, helps Israel to make this promise. In this final chapter, we see that Israelโs agreement has the same parts as other agreements from that time. These agreements or promises have seven parts.

Joshua is at the end of his life. But Joshua doesnโt name anyone to replace him as leader. The Israelites donโt need a human king. God is their leader. If the Israelites stay loyal to God, He will lead and protect them. The agreement helps the people remember that their king is the Lord.

โ Joshua reminded Israel of their whole story-from Abraham to Egypt to Canaan. In that story, God was the main hero. He said, "I took... I gave... I delivered." Israel did not free themselves or win the land. Everything was a gift of God's grace.
โ Joshua told the people listening, "You were there." God's covenant with their ancestors was also a promise for them. Because God had done so much, Joshua called them to throw away all false gods and serve the Lord alone.

โ Joshua gave Israel a clear choice: serve the Lord with all your heart or serve other gods.
โ To "๐๐๐๐ซ ๐ญ๐ก๐ ๐๐จ๐ซ๐" means to respect and honor Him. It is knowing how great and holy God is, and how much He asks of us. This respect leads us to obey Him.
โ Serving God "๐ข๐ง ๐ฌ๐ข๐ง๐๐๐ซ๐ข๐ญ๐ฒ" means with a pure and complete heart, like a perfect sacrifice offered to God.
โ Serving God "i๐ข๐ง ๐ญ๐ซ๐ฎ๐ญ๐ก" means with faithful and steady loyalty, just as God has always been faithful to Israel True service comes from a thankful heart that remembers all God has done.
โ Joshua said, "๐ช๐๐๐๐๐ ๐๐๐
๐๐ ๐๐๐๐ ๐๐๐ ๐๐๐๐ ๐๐๐๐๐." For him and his family, the choice was clear: "๐พ๐ ๐๐๐๐ ๐๐๐๐๐ ๐๐๐ ๐ณ๐๐๐

โ Joshua respects the free will of his people. He wants the Israelites to serve God because of their free choice. Joshua doesnโt want Israel to feel forced to serve God. Thatโs why Joshua reminds the Israelites that they freely chose to serve
the Lord.
โ In their answer, the Israelites show that they understand that the God of their fathers is now their God. The Israelites are willing to serve God with their whole hearts.
โ The decision to serve God is very important. Their decision will change their lives. They must live for God and follow His rules. If they do, God will bless them. But if they disobey, they will suffer. Joshua wants them to understand fully what they are promising.
โ The Israelites must make their own decision to serve God. Joshua canโt make that decision for them.
โ Israel must know that humans canโt serve God in their own strength. We must have a personal relationship with God first. He must save us. Then we may serve Him.

โ To conclude his speech, Joshua asked them to remove the gods that are โamong you,โ and to turn their hearts back to God (Josh. 24:23).
โ For the third time, the people pledged to serve God (Josh. 24:24). The covenant was ratified, and, like Moses, Joshua โgave them statutes and lawsโ (Josh. 24:25).
โ Although the covenant with God is based on a living relationship with Him and cannot be fully expressed through mere regulations, Joshua understood that it was necessary to leave clear reminders that would help them stay in the covenant.
โ He put the covenant in writing, and erected a memorial monument: a stone to serve as a witness to the commitment they had made (Josh. 24:26-27).

โ The book of Joshua ends with three burials. One of them, prophesied hundreds of years earlier, was the burial of Joseph in Jacob's inheritance ( Gen. 50:24-26; Josh. 24:32).
โ The rebellious generation that had come out of Egypt was buried in the desert. But the new generation was to be buried โin their inheritance,โ along with those who had remained faithful in an unfaithful generation: Joshua and Eleazar (Josh. 24:29-30, 33).
โ This new generation remained faithful (Josh. 24:31). But what about the next generation (Judg. 2:10-11)?
โ Each generation must make its own covenant with God. The faith of their parents can help them make the right decision. But the decision is theirs. Let us make our decision today: โAs for me and my household, we will serve the Lordโ (Josh. 24:15 NIV).

โJoshua wrote down Israelโs promise in the book of the law. Then Joshua put a big stone under an oak tree near the Lordโs holy tent. โThen Joshua said to all the people, โThis stone will help you remember what we said today. This stone was here when the Lord ord was speaking to us today. So this stone will be something that helps you remember what happened today. The stone will be a witness against you. It will stop you from turning against your God.โ โ [Joshua 24:27, ERV]. Joshua announces that his warning to the people is not his own words. The warning is from God. This big stone will be a memorial. This memorial will help the Israelites in the future to remember this time. The stone also would be a witness against the people if they start to worship false gods.โ
