With support from the MacArthur Foundation, the Women's Rights Advancement and Protection Alternative (WRAPA) partnered with AdvocacyNigeria to host a series of one-day town hall engagements in Zamfara State's three senatorial zones: Central, North, and West. These events aimed to raise awareness about the need for electoral reform and promote citizen participation in electoral processes.
The town hall meetings brought together diverse stakeholders, including women groups, organizations of persons with disabilities, media representatives, traditional leaders, and religious leaders. In the Central Senatorial Zone, Haj Umma Rimi, WRAPA representative, emphasized the importance of electoral reform for ensuring free, fair, and transparent elections in her welcome remarks. Malan Rabiu Sambo, AdvocacyNigeria state coordinator, added that the initiative would increase awareness and engagement among women and persons with disabilities (PWDs), fostering dialogue between stakeholders and driving advocacy for policy reforms that promote gender equity, social inclusion, and accountability.
Participants across all three zones unanimously agreed that women and PWDs require greater support to compete equally with men in the political arena. The events concluded with stakeholders pledging to amplify the message of electoral reform within their communities, utilizing advocacy tools such as the National Gender Policy and sensitization flyers to drive awareness in various settings. Through these efforts, WRAPA and AdvocacyNigeria aim to promote a more inclusive and representative electoral process in Zamfara State. , Women’s Rights Advancement and Protection Alternative - WRAPA Nigeria
