Dalori Community Commits to Ending Gender-Based Violence after Lawyers Alert Training

Dalori Community in Borno State has committed to preventing and ending gender-based violence (GBV) following a community engagement organised by Lawyers Alert. The engagement brought together 60 community members, 30 women and 30 men, to discuss GBV, harmful gender norms and the role of communities in preventing violence.

Following the training, participants committed to speaking out against GBV, challenging harmful practices, supporting survivors and promoting positive behaviours. Men were particularly encouraged to become active allies and influence other men and boys to reject violence.

The commitment marks a step towards building a safer community where women and men work together to prevent GBV and promote dignity, safety and gender equality. The activity was implemented under Lawyers Alert’s Male Feminist Network Project, with support fromAfrican Centre for Leadership, Strategy & Development .

Mining activities across communities in Africa go beyond the extraction of valuable minerals. For many mining-affected communities, insecurity, displacement, environmental degradation, loss of livelihoods, and limited access to healthcare are creating serious consequences for women and girls. These challenges can increase their vulnerability to sexual exploitation, teenage pregnancy, and sexual and gender-based violence.

Today, we turn attention to the human cost of mining and the urgent need for accountability, community protection, and access to sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) services for women and girls affected by mining, conflict, and displacement.

Who bears the greatest cost of mining, and what can be done to protect women, girls, and vulnerable communities?
