FUNTUA CONSULTATIVE FORUM PAYS COURTESY VISIT TO KATSINA STATE MINISTRY OF BASIC AND SECONDARY EDUCATION

12th May 2026

The leadership of Funtua Consultative Forum paid a courtesy visit to the Katsina State Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education as part of its continued commitment to promoting educational development and addressing critical challenges affecting schools within the Funtua zone.

The delegation was led by the Chairman of the Forum, Dr. Zaharddeen Idris, who, in his remarks, highlighted several pressing educational issues requiring the urgent attention and intervention of the Ministry.

Among the key requests presented by the Forum were the construction of a new Zonal Education Quality Assurance (ZEQA) Office in Funtua due to the severe dilapidation of the current structure which is beyond repair, as well as the renovation and proper equipping of the CBT centre in Funtua and provide another one in Bakori to meet the growing demands of students in the area.

The Forum also appealed for the approval of the relocation of Government Technical College, Funtua, from Mashi to Government College (Day Wing), Funtua, in order to strengthen and improve technical education within the community.

In addition, the delegation stressed the need for strengthening and reviewing Guidance and Counselling units in secondary schools to improve students’ understanding of career choices and academic direction.

The Forum further called for the employment of adequate non-academic personnel, including permanent security guards, messengers, and cleaners for schools and ZEQA offices, to safeguard government facilities and ensure smooth operations.

Other requests presented during the visit included the provision of an inspection vehicle for the ZEQA Office, Funtua, and enhanced monitoring and training of Examination Officers as well as Guidance and Counselling Officers on computer-based record keeping for students.

Responding, the Honourable Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Malam Yusuf Suleiman Jibiya, commended the Forum for its unwavering commitment to the advancement of education in Funtua and described the issues raised as genuine and timely contributions toward the educational development of the area.

The Commissioner emphasized the importance of education and the continuous pursuit of knowledge as vital instruments for societal growth and sustainable development. He further assured the delegation of the Ministry’s readiness and commitment to carefully address the requests presented in line with the government’s ongoing efforts to strengthen the education sector across Katsina State.

The visit further reaffirmed the strong partnership between community-based organizations and government institutions in promoting quality education and sustainable development within the state.

FUNTUA ON THE RISE: COMMENDATION AND A CALL TO CONSOLIDATE GAINS IN EDUCATION INFRASTRUCTURE

The Funtua Consultative Forum (FCF) extends its sincere appreciation to the Katsina State Government for the visible strides recorded in infrastructural development across the state, particularly within Funtua and its environs. Indeed, it is not an exaggeration to say that Funtua has never had it so good. The ongoing and completed projects in road construction, public facilities, and community development have significantly improved the socio-economic outlook of our people and strengthened confidence in governance.

While we commend these laudable efforts, we respectfully draw the attention of the state government to some critical areas within the education sector that require urgent intervention to sustain and build upon these gains.

Foremost among these is the rehabilitation of the Funtua Computer-Based Test (CBT) Centre, which was unfortunately burned down in 2022 and has remained in a state of disrepair since then. This facility is not only vital to Funtua Local Government but also serves a wider catchment area, including Faskari, Dandume, Sabuwa, Bakori, Danja, as well as several neighbouring local governments from adjoining states. The absence of this centre has placed an undue burden on students, forcing them to travel long distances to access essential examination services. Restoring the CBT centre will greatly ease this hardship and enhance access to educational opportunities for our youth.

In a similar vein, the Funtua Zonal Education Quality Assurance Office requires urgent rehabilitation. As a key institution responsible for maintaining educational standards, its effective operation is crucial for the monitoring and improvement of teaching and learning outcomes across the zone. Revitalizing this office will strengthen oversight functions and contribute to the overall quality of education in the region.

Furthermore, the Forum respectfully calls on the Katsina State Government to expedite the relocation of the Government Technical College (GTC) Funtua from Mashi back to its recommended permanent site at Government College Day Wing. This relocation is essential to provide a more conducive learning environment, improve technical education delivery, and equip our young people with the practical skills needed to thrive in today’s economy.

The Funtua Consultative Forum remains committed to constructive engagement and partnership with the government in pursuit of sustainable development. We are confident that these concerns, once addressed, will further consolidate the remarkable progress already achieved and secure a brighter future for our communities.

Urgent Call for Action on Insecurity Threatening Farming Activities in Katsina State

The Funtua Consultative Forum (FCF) expresses deep concern over the worsening state of insecurity across several local government areas in Katsina State, particularly as it affects farming communities at a critical time when the farming season is approaching.

Reports reaching the Forum indicate that a significant number of farmers have abandoned or are considering abandoning their farmlands due to the persistent threat of kidnapping and banditry. These criminal activities have continued unabated in areas such as Faskari, Funtua, Dandume, Sabuwa, Malumfashi, Kafur, Kankara, Safana, Danmusa, Matazu, Jibia, and surrounding communities.

Despite previous peace and reconciliation efforts between affected communities and perpetrators, the situation has not improved to a level that guarantees the safety of innocent farmers. As a result, fear and uncertainty now dominate rural areas, discouraging agricultural activities and threatening the livelihood of thousands of families.

The Forum is particularly alarmed that over 50 percent of farmers may be unable to engage in farming this season due to insecurity. This poses a serious risk not only to food production but also to the overall economic stability of Katsina State, where a large proportion of the population depends on agriculture for survival.

If immediate and decisive measures are not taken, the consequences could be severe, including widespread hunger, increased poverty, and heightened social instability. No responsible government would desire such outcomes for its people.

In light of the above, the Funtua Consultative Forum calls on the Katsina State Government to:

- Clearly outline the concrete steps being taken to address insecurity in the affected areas.
- Deploy adequate security personnel to safeguard farming communities and farmlands.
- Strengthen intelligence and community-based security initiatives.
- Restore confidence among farmers by ensuring their safety as they return to their fields.

The Forum urges the government to act swiftly and decisively to protect lives, secure livelihoods, and preserve the agricultural backbone of the state.

The people of Katsina State deserve to live and work without fear. Ensuring the safety of farmers is not only a necessity but a responsibility that must be urgently fulfilled.

STRONG CONDEMNATION OF RISING INSECURITY IN FUNTUA LGA

The Funtua Consultative Forum (FCF) wishes to express its deep concern and unequivocal condemnation of the alarming rise in insecurity across Funtua Local Government Area in recent times.

Reports of criminal activities such as mobile phone snatching, motorcycle theft, sara s**a (violent attacks), and other forms of robbery have become increasingly frequent. These acts of lawlessness have not only instilled fear among residents but have, in some unfortunate instances, resulted in the loss of innocent lives. This situation is unacceptable and poses a serious threat to the peace, unity, and development of our community.

We extend our heartfelt condolences to families who have lost their loved ones due to these tragic incidents. We pray for the repose of the souls of the departed and for comfort and strength for their families during this difficult time.

The Forum calls on all relevant government authorities and security agencies to urgently intensify efforts to curb these criminal activities. There is a pressing need for increased surveillance, intelligence gathering, patrol operations, and swift prosecution of offenders to serve as a deterrent to others.

Furthermore, we appeal to parents, guardians, and the entire Funtua community to rise to the occasion by being vigilant and proactive. We must all take responsibility for the safety of our environment by:

- Monitoring the activities and movements of our children and wards
- Reporting any suspicious persons or unusual movements to the appropriate authorities
- Supporting community-based security initiatives
- Promoting values of discipline, morality, and respect for the rule of law

Security is a collective responsibility, and only through unity and cooperation can we overcome these challenges.

The Funtua Consultative Forum remains committed to working with all stakeholders to restore peace, ensure safety, and protect the lives and property of all residents.

Together, we must stand united against insecurity.
