“My Daughter Has Sickle Cell Because of an Unwise Mistake I Made Due to Religion”

~A Nigerian man cries out over what his family is currently going through after his daughter was born with Sickle Cell Disorder.

Narrating his experience, he said he was once a devoted and staunch religious follower who tried to live strictly by his interpretation of the Bible. He claimed that he and his wife dated for three years without engaging in sexual in*******se, despite both of them knowing that they were of the AS genotype respectively.

He stated that because of his strong religious beliefs, he convinced himself that God would not allow them to have a child with sickle cell disease. However, he now regrets the decision and says he is struggling with the reality of his daughter’s condition.

How can I describe the pain crisis of sickle cell disorder?
1. It is like the labour pain a term pregnant woman experiences when it is at its peak.
2. It is like the pain of multiple bone fractures.
3. It is like the pain of bone cancer.
It is like the chest stiffness that an asthmatic experience when in acute severe asthma attack.

So, recently, I met a patient with thyroid disease suffering from chronic fatigue syndrome.
She is the first person I met suffering from chronic fatigue syndrome due to thyroid disease.
Discussing her experience of chronic fatigue syndrome with me,
And corroborating it with my experience of it was enlightening.
It was evident from our discussion that many health workers can neither identify nor treat chronic fatigue syndrome.
I pray that God grant the medical community the wisdom and help to understand and permanently cure chronic fatigue syndrome,
