EHCON Launches Greenhouse Gas Emissions Initiative, Pledges Nationwide Expansion.
By Gaddafi Yusuf Saleh
The Environmental Health Council of Nigeria has launched a national Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Emissions Initiative aimed at reducing harmful emissions, improving air quality, and strengthening environmental health governance across Nigeria.
The initiative, implemented under the National Air Quality Programme of the Federal Ministry of Environment, commenced with a sensitization and inspection exercise at the Office of the Head of Service of the Federation in Abuja.
Environmental health officials conducted practical assessments on government vehicles, examining engine performance to determine their emission levels and environmental safety compliance. During the exercise, a chemical solution known as Oxytane was introduced as part of efforts to enhance engine efficiency and reduce the release of harmful gases into the atmosphere.
Leading the sensitization exercise, the Registrar of the Council, Yakubu Mohammed Baba, SAN, described the initiative as a critical step towards safeguarding public health and protecting the environment. He assured that the programme would be expanded beyond federal institutions to states and local government areas across the country to ensure broader compliance and national impact.
“This initiative is not limited to Abuja. We are committed to extending it to all states and local government areas to ensure cleaner air and a healthier environment for all Nigerians,” he said.
The initiative is in line with the National Environmental Health Practice Regulations, 2024, and is designed to support Nigeria’s Nationally Determined Contributions under global climate agreements. It also aligns with the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, which prioritises environmental sustainability, public health protection, and sustainable national development.
Environmental experts say the programme will strengthen emissions monitoring systems, improve environmental compliance, and contribute significantly to Nigeria’s efforts to combat climate change.
The Council noted that the initiative represents a major milestone in promoting cleaner technologies, reducing pollution, and ensuring a safer environment for present and future generations.
