At Advocacy for Sustainable Livelihood Foundation (ASLF), we believe that sustainability is not just about the environment, it’s about people.

We stand for a world where individuals are not just supported, but empowered with the knowledge and opportunities to build lasting livelihoods.

We stand for solutions that protect the environment while creating income and dignity.

We stand for communities where waste is not seen as useless, but as a resource with value.

And most importantly, we stand for the people, especially those whose work sustains our environment every day, yet often goes unseen.

Through education, awareness, and action, we are committed to promoting sustainable practices that create real impact.

Because true change happens when people and the planet thrive together.

Recycling is not just about protecting the environment, it’s also about creating opportunities for people.

Across many communities, recycling provides a source of income for thousands of individuals.

From collecting recyclable materials to sorting, processing, and reselling them, every stage of the recycling chain creates jobs.

Waste workers, often called scavengers, play a key role in this system.

They recover materials that would otherwise end up polluting our environment and turn them into valuable resources.

Through recycling:

♻️ Plastic, paper, and metal become income

♻️ Waste becomes opportunity

♻️ Skills are developed and livelihoods are sustained

When we support recycling, we are not only reducing waste, we are also supporting real people, families, and communities.

Because sustainability is not just about the planet, it’s about people too.

Behind every recyclable item recovered is a person doing the hard, often unseen work.

Scavengers, also known as informal waste workers, play a key role in keeping our environment clean and supporting recycling systems.

But despite their importance, they face serious daily challenges such as:

🔹 Health Risks
Exposure to hazardous waste, sharp objects, and harmful chemicals without proper protection.

🔹 Unsafe Working Conditions
Most work in dumpsites or on the streets with little or no safety measures.

🔹 Social Stigma
They are often misunderstood, disrespected, or ignored by society.

🔹 Unstable Income
Earnings depend on what they find each day, with no guarantee of consistency.

Recycling is not just about waste, it’s about people. Understanding these challenges is the first step toward building a more inclusive and sustainable system, one that protects both the environment and those who care for it.

It may seem like a small step, but waste separation is the foundation of effective recycling.

When waste is mixed together, recyclable materials become contaminated and often end up in landfills instead of being reused.

But when you separate your waste properly, you make it easier for recycling systems and the people behind them to do their job.

Here’s a simple guide to get started:

Recyclables: Plastics, paper, glass, metals
Organic waste: Food scraps, biodegradable materials

Non-recyclables: sanitary waste, certain packaging
Separating your waste doesn’t just protect the environment, it also supports the work of waste collectors who recover valuable materials every day.

Small action. Real impact. So tell us in the comments: Do you separate your waste at home?

Today, we celebrate the hands that build, clean, carry, sort, and sustain our communities.

Workers’ Day is not just about recognition, it is about respect, dignity, and fair opportunities for every worker, especially those whose efforts often go unseen.

Across our communities, waste workers and informal laborers play a critical role in environmental sustainability and economic survival.

Yet many continue to face unsafe conditions, low income, and limited access to support systems.
At Advocacy for Sustainable Livelihood Foundation, we believe that every form of work deserves value.

We are committed to supporting sustainable livelihoods by advocating for safer working conditions, inclusive opportunities, and long-term empowerment.

Because when workers are supported, communities thrive.

And when dignity is restored to work, real development begins.

Happy Workers’ Day.

Before most people begin their day, scavengers are already at work.

They move through streets, dumpsites, and collection points, searching for materials that others have discarded such as plastic bottles, metals, paper.

What many see as waste, they see as opportunity.

A typical day is long and physically demanding. Hours are spent sorting through mixed waste, often without protective gear, exposed to harmful substances and harsh conditions.

Yet, through this work, they recover recyclable materials that help reduce environmental pollution and keep valuable resources in circulation.

Scavengers play an important role in the recycling system. They help reduce the volume of waste in our communities and contribute to environmental sustainability in ways that often go unnoticed.

Understanding their daily reality helps us see recycling beyond the process. It is also about people, effort, and survival.

Recycling doesn’t just protect the planet. It supports lives.

Not all waste is useless, some of it can be transformed into something valuable.

Understanding what can be recycled is the first step toward reducing waste and protecting our environment.

Common Types of Recyclable Waste:

1. Plastics
Items like bottles, containers, and packaging materials can be processed and reused.

2. Paper
Newspapers, cartons, office paper, and magazines can be recycled into new paper products

3. Glass
Glass bottles and jars can be recycled repeatedly without losing quality.

4. Metals
Aluminum cans, tins, and scrap metals can be melted and reused.

When we separate and recycle these materials properly, we reduce pollution, conserve natural resources, and support a more sustainable future.

Small actions like this make a big difference.

When waste is not recycled, it doesn’t just disappear, it becomes a growing problem for our environment, our health, and our future.

Unrecycled waste often ends up in landfills, open dumps, or is burned. These practices come with serious consequences:

Land Pollution: Waste accumulates and contaminates the soil, making land unsafe for farming and living.

Harm to Wildlife: Animals often mistake waste for food, leading to injury or death.

Loss of Valuable Resources: Materials that could be reused are wasted, increasing the need to extract new resources from the earth.

Recycling is not just an environmental action, it is a necessary step toward a healthier and more sustainable future.

The way we manage our waste today determines the quality of life tomorrow.

Your health is not just about what you eat or how often you exercise. It is also about the environment you live in.

Poor waste disposal and lack of recycling don’t just harm the planet, they directly affect human health.

When waste is left unmanaged:

It contaminates water sources

Pollutes the air we breathe

Creates breeding grounds for disease-causing organisms

Exposes communities and waste workers to serious health risks

Recycling plays a simple but powerful role in protecting public health.

By reducing waste, we reduce pollution, prevent disease, and create safer, cleaner communities for everyone.

This World Health Day, remember: A healthier environment means healthier people.

Small actions like separating your waste and recycling properly can make a big difference.

Recycling is the process of collecting and transforming waste materials into new, usable products.

Instead of throwing things away, recycling gives them a second life.

From plastic bottles to paper and metal, many everyday items can be reused to create something new.

This simple act helps reduce waste, conserve natural resources, and protect our environment.

Recycling is more than just a process, it’s a step toward a more sustainable future.

Because when we recycle, we don’t just manage waste, we create opportunities.
