PRESS STATEMENT ON THE AIRSTRIKE AT JILLI FUTCHIMIRAM IN GEIDAM LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA, YOBE STATE

The Buni Scholars Organisation (BSO) expresses deep sorrow, shock, and profound concern over the tragic reports emerging from Jilli Futchimiram in Geidam Local Government Area of Yobe State, where a military airstrike targeting suspected insurgents has reportedly resulted in the devastating loss of civilian lives.

According to available information, the operation, which involved multiple military aircraft, struck a local market, with over 100 persons feared dead and many others sustaining varying degrees of injuries. Medical personnel at Geidam General Hospital are currently attending to numerous victims, with fears that the casualty figure may continue to rise.

While we acknowledge and deeply respect the sacrifices and commitment of the Nigerian Armed Forces in the ongoing fight against insurgency, this unfortunate incident underscores the urgent need for heightened caution in military operations, particularly in civilian-populated areas. The magnitude of this tragedy calls for a thorough, transparent, and independent investigation to ascertain the circumstances surrounding the strike and to ensure accountability where necessary.

The lives lost were those of innocent citizens men, women, and children engaged in their daily activities. Their untimely deaths are a painful reminder of the human cost of conflict and the need to prioritize the protection of civilians at all times.

The BSO extends its heartfelt condolences to His Excellency, Hon Mai Mala Buni, CON, the Government and people of Yobe State, particularly the residents of Geidam Local Government Area. Our thoughts and prayers are with the bereaved families during this moment of immense grief. We also pray for the swift and full recovery of those injured. May Almighty Allah grant eternal rest to the departed souls and give their families the strength to bear this irreparable loss. Amin.

We respectfully call on the Federal Government and the military high command to:
• Ensure immediate and unrestricted access to the affected area for independent investigators and humanitarian actors;
• Provide urgent and adequate medical care to all injured victims;
• Offer appropriate compensation and support to the families of those who lost their lives.

At this difficult time, we must not lose sight of our shared humanity. The fight against terrorism must never come at the expense of innocent lives. The protection of civilians must remain paramount in all security operations.
