From Being Defined by Disability to Defining His Own Future: Aliyu's Story
Meet our Beneficiaries.

Aliyu is 25, from Bakori LGA, Katsina State.

For years, people saw only his disability, not his ability. Opportunities were almost non-existent.

"People thought we had no value except as beggars," Aliyu recalled quietly. "No one asked what I could do, only what I lacked."

Like many persons with disabilities, Aliyu's struggle was not a lack of potential , but a lack of a chance to prove it.
That chance came when he became a part of the STRIVE II Project, funded by the European Union in Nigeria and implemented by Wadata Relief Care Initiative - WRCI in partnership with Hedayah

Through the ongoing programme, Aliyu has received four months of vocational and business skills training, alongside Mental Health and Psychosocial Support (MHPSS) to rebuild his confidence and well-being. More than a trade, he is gaining practical knowledge and the belief that he can build a future on his own terms.

When the programme concludes, Aliyu will receive a startup kit to establish his own business centre, offering phone charging and computer services — a step towards financial independence and becoming an essential service provider in his community.

His journey is a powerful reminder: When we invest in ability, we rewrite the narrative.

Today, the world marks the International Day of Peace.

This year's theme "Invest in Peace: For Everyone, Everywhere, Every Day" — reminds us that peace is not just built in conference rooms. It is shaped in classrooms, homes, and communities like Bakori, Katsina State by everyday people choosing dialogue over division, support over stigma, and dignity over exclusion.

Through the STRIVE II project, WRCI continues to invest in peace. One conversation, one Safe Space, one community at a time.

Mental health challenges are not a weakness. They are a human response to stress, violence, loss, and hardship. And no one should have to face them alone.

Across Bakori community and beyond, families are carrying burdens shaped by insecurity, displacement, and loss. Left unspoken, these struggles can deepen. But healing becomes possible when people know two things: that what they're feeling is normal, and that help is within reach.

Through the STRIVE II project, WRCI is working to change how mental health is talked about — replacing silence and stigma with openness and support. At the WRCI Safe Space, trained social workers, community support groups, and volunteers are ready to walk alongside anyone who needs it.

From Stigma to Skill: Abbas Finds a New Path.

For years, Abbas lived with the weight of discrimination, stigma and the challenges that came with living with a disability. He experienced moments that affected not only his daily life, but also his mental wellbeing.

Then came an encounter with Wadata Relief Care Initiative - WRCI

Through psychosocial support, Abbas found renewed hope and encouragement. He was subsequently enrolled in vocational training, where he is currently learning tailoring and building a skill he hopes will give him greater independence.

Today, the smile on his face tells a different story.

In this video, Abbas shares his journey, reflects on how far he has come, and proudly shows a dress he made himself—a moment that clearly means more than just learning how to sew. It represents confidence, possibility and a renewed sense of purpose.

His story reminds us that inclusion is not simply about giving people support. It is about creating opportunities for people to discover what they are capable of becoming.

Abbas appreciates WRCI and its partners Hedayah European Union in Nigeria for the support he has received and hopes that more people living with similar challenges will have access to such opportunities in the future.

One opportunity can change a story. One skill can restore confidence. And one person empowered can inspire many others.
