🤝 Strategic Partnership in Motion!

Last week, a team from the CLIMATE AWARENESS ADVOCACY AND RESILIENCE INITIATIVE (CAARI) paid a courtesy visit to Alh. Dr. Garba Iliya, Director of Finance and Admin at the Northeast Development Commission (NEDC), at his residence in Damaturu.

The purpose? To engage with him on our core mandate—creating climate change awareness and driving resilience-building across communities in Yobe State.

We are delighted to report that we had a very productive discussion on areas of collaboration between CAARI and NEDC. Our shared goals for Yobe State and the wider Northeast region align perfectly, and we are excited about the possibilities that lie ahead.

Dr. Garba Iliya gave us a wonderful welcome and assured us of NEDC's maximum support in achieving our mandate.

Together, we can build a more resilient and climate-conscious Northeast! 🌍💚

🚨 URGENT CALL: Transform Babban Tsangaya from Dumpsite to Livable Neighbourhood 🚨

Nestled in the heart of Damaturu, Babban Tsangaya — one of the city’s oldest communities — is today drowning in a massive refuse dump and an uncontrolled waterway that accumulates filth, especially during the rainy season. Elderly residents and children are constantly at risk of malaria and cholera outbreaks.

At Climate Awareness Advocacy and Resilience Initiative (CAARI), we believe this site can and must be turned around. The dump site can become a compost-making hub, creating jobs while cleaning the environment. The neighbourhood desperately needs a proper drainage system to channel stormwater safely away from homes.

We are calling on:
Yobe ACRESAL Yobe ECCAP Yobe State Environmental Protection Agency Yobe State Ministry of Environment Damaturu Local Government Council
All relevant stakeholders

to urgently intervene and transform Babban Tsangaya into the safe, healthy, and dignified neighbourhood it deserves to be.

🌍 Clean environment, healthy people, resilient communities — it starts now.

🌪️ SANDSTORM HITS DAMATURU — WE CAN’T KEEP LIVING LIKE THIS.

Today, after a scorching 42°C and high humidity, a severe sandstorm darkened our skies. Fierce winds swept through the city, and while a light shower followed, the damage to buildings and infrastructure is already clear. Thankfully, no serious casualties have been reported so far — but how long will luck be on our side?

This is not just bad weather. It’s climate change in action. And it’s preventable.

Tree planting. Windbreaks. Real commitment. Real action. These are not luxuries — they are lifelines.

At Climate Awareness Advocacy and Resilience Initiative (CAARI), we continue to raise awareness, push for government commitment, and build resilience in our most vulnerable communities. But we can’t do it alone.

🤝 We are calling on all stakeholders — government, partners, community leaders, and individuals — to join us. Together, we can protect our communities from the growing effects of climate change.

The time to act is now. Not after the next storm.

The regions of the Northeast Nigeria is continuing with a speeding encroachment with desertification speeding at over 3.5km/year. Although, several steps could be employed to reverse this trend. How do we prevent desertification? below, are some steps CAARI has identified to remind us on how we can go about it.

⚠️ 2026 SEASONAL FORECAST FOR YOBE STATE: WHAT COMMUNITIES MUST KNOW

At Climate Awareness Advocacy and Resilience Initiative (CAARI), we are committed to keeping our communities informed and prepared. Here is a breakdown of the 2026 forecast from NiMet and NIHSA, what it means for us in Yobe State, and the steps we must take together.
🌧️ RAINFALL OUTLOOK

• Shorter rainy season expected in parts of the state.
• Normal rainfall amount overall — but this rain may fall in intense bursts, increasing risks.
☀️ DRY SPELL ALERT

• A severe dry spell of up to 21 days is predicted during June–July–August. Farmers, please plan your planting carefully!

🌊 FLOOD RISK: HIGH
• Yobe is among 33 high flood-risk states for 2026.
• Communities in Bade, Jakusko, Nguru, Damaturu, and Potiskum must be on high alert.

✅ WHAT YOU CAN DO NOW — PREVENTION & PREPAREDNESS
1. Clear Drainages & Waterways
Keep gutters, culverts, and drainage channels free of waste and silt. Blocked drainages worsen flooding. Desilting has already begun in Damaturu and Potiskum — let’s support these efforts.
2. Relocate from Flood-Prone Areas
If you live or farm along riverbanks or floodplains, consider temporary relocation before the rains peak. Lives are worth more than property.
3. Stay Informed
Listen to warnings from YOSEMA, NiMet, and local authorities. Act early — don’t wait until the water rises.
4. Protect Documents & Valuables
Keep important documents in waterproof bags and store them in elevated, safe locations.
5. Farmers: Adapt Your Planting Calendar
With a shorter season and a long dry spell expected, consult agricultural extension agents for advice on drought-tolerant seed varieties and optimal planting dates.
At CAARI, we believe that awareness saves lives and resilience secures futures. Let’s work together to protect our families, farms, and communities this season. Share this post so every household can prepare.

Together, we build resilience. 💚🌍

We celebrate the birthday of one of the rearest conservation icons, a climate activist the world has ever seen. Sir, David Attenborough is 100 years old. His pioneering nature documentaries like the "Life on earth and Planet Earth" has shaped our thinking about nature and biodiversity. CAARI celebrates an icon in Climate Change activism.

Happy birthday Sir, David Attenborough.

An avoidable sandstorm happened today in Damaturu, the Northeast Nigeria where climate change effects becomes normal. A higher temperature of 43°c with 21% humidity demonstrate how taugh the situation can be. However, a tree plantation cover can reduce the intensity of the storm, moderate the temperature and humidity there by reducing heat stress and improves soil and water quality.

The need to invest more in advocacy can never be overemphasized. Government institutions such as the , , are at the forefront of intervening to this situation.

🔥 Yobe, This Heat Is No Joke! 🔥

Right now, it’s 43°C with bone-dry air — and this oven-like weather is forecasted to last into next week.

No light. No water. The sweat disappears before you even feel it… but the dehydration is real and dangerous.

⚠️ Let’s look out for each other:
✅ Drink water constantly, even if you’re not thirsty
✅ Avoid direct sun between 12pm–4pm
✅ Check on children, the elderly, and neighbours
✅ Store drinking water now while you still can

If breeze comes, it’s not relief — it’s more hot air. Don’t be deceived.

Stay safe, Yobe. This one will pass, but let’s make sure we all pass through it together. 💪🏾💧
