GENDER-BASED VIOLENCE IS A CRIME, WE MUST STAND AGAINST IT.

Gender-Based Violence (GBV) remains one of the most serious challenges affecting our communities today. It cuts across age, religion, education, and social status, leaving deep physical, emotional, and psychological scars on victims, mostly women and girls, but also men and boys.

Gender-based violence is happening in our homes, our streets, and our communities. Too often, it is hidden behind silence, excuses, and fear. Too often, victims are told to endure, to pray, or to keep quiet “for peace.”

There is no peace in violence.

Beating, humiliating, controlling, threatening, or forcing someone because of their gender is not discipline, not culture, and not love. It is abuse. And abuse destroys lives.

GBV is not only physical abuse. It includes emotional violence, sexual harassment, economic deprivation, intimidation, forced marriage, and any act that denies a person dignity, safety, or freedom because of their gender.

Many victims suffer in silence because they fear shame, retaliation, or being blamed. Some never speak at all. That silence is dangerous, because it protects the abuser and abandons the victim.

Silence enables violence. When we look away, excuse abuse, or blame victims, we allow injustice to thrive. Every individual deserves to live free from fear, harm, and discrimination.

Ending GBV is not a women’s issue alone, it is a community responsibility. As a community, we must Speak up against all forms of gender-based violence. We must Support survivors with compassion, not judgment. We must Hold perpetrators accountable, regardless of status or relationship and we must Educate our youth on respect and equality.

A safe society is built when men and women stand together to protect dignity, promote justice, and uphold humanity. We at Old Bra-Bra Youth Initiative believe that when one person is abused, the entire community is weakened.

Let's say no to Gender-Based Violence and any type of violence in general. WE MUST STAND AGAINST IT.

Youth-Led Clean-Up Campaign Continues to Transform Old Bra-Bra Neighborhood

On Sunday, 29th June 2025, the Old Bra-Bra Youth Initiative (OBYI) successfully conducted the second phase of its Community Clean-Up Campaign at the Old Bra-Bra Housing Estate, Gashua Road, Damaturu. The event once again demonstrated the strong commitment of the youth towards environmental responsibility and community development.

The clean-up exercise drew active participation from both male and female volunteers. The women focused on cleaning the mosque interior, ensuring it was neat and presentable, while the men took charge of the surrounding areas, removing trash and opening up blocked drainage systems — a timely effort considering the ongoing rainy season.

One of the major highlights of this phase was the clearing of clogged drainages and waterways that had been obstructed by dirt and waste. Volunteers worked collectively to restore water flow and reduce the risk of flooding. While a significant portion of the drainage system was successfully cleared, some parts, especially the main channel at the estate gate, remain partially blocked and are scheduled for continuation in the next round of the campaign.

Even children joined the effort with excitement and energy, showcasing a strong sense of unity and shared responsibility across all age groups.

This clean-up initiative is a testament to the power of youth-led action. It reflects the determination of young people to not only improve their immediate environment but also to inspire broader community involvement.

The Old Bra-Bra Youth Initiative remains committed to organizing regular clean-up exercises and aims to introduce educational campaigns on sanitation and sustainable waste management. The ultimate goal is to instill a long-term culture of cleanliness and civic responsibility within the community.

APPRECIATION STATEMENT FOR SHA’ABAN

In the journey of building the Old Bra-Bra Youth Initiative, there have been individuals whose unwavering support and visionary guidance have shaped our path. Among them, one name stands out—Yusuf Adamu Idi (Sha’aban).
