PROJECT IMPACT UPDATE

Surwa Community and Education Development Initiative - SCEDI is thrilled to share the successful completion of one of its self funded projects, the Partnership for Accelerated Adult Literacy Programme (PAALiP). This project was proudly implemented in collaboration with the State Agency for Mass Education (SAME).

Project Summary:
Location: Damaturu LGA, Yobe State.
Duration: 9 months (phased implementation)
Centres: Maisandari, Maduri, Pompomari & Central Learning Centers
Enrollment: 150 adult learners
Graduated: 137 learners (certificates awarded with SAME)

Measurable Impact
1. The number of adult learners that read the word rose from 6% in baseline to 55% at the endline.

2. The number of adult learners that read sentences was 6% in baseline but increased to 45% at the endline.

3. Those that can solve the basic Addition rose from 4% in baseline to 51% at the endline.

4. Those adult learners that can solve word problems were only 10% in the baseline but increased to 49% at the endline.

These results reflect life-changing gains in literacy and numeracy, empowering adults with skills for daily decision-making, livelihoods, and active participation in society.

This is more than numbers — it’s confidence restored, opportunities unlocked, and communities strengthened.

Our appreciation goes to Yobe SAME, our community volunteer learning facilitators, resilient learners and our staff for making this achievement possible.

Together, we are proving that adult education works.

SCEDI Launches Self-Funded Alternative Learning and Life Skills Project in Yobe State

Surwa Community and Education Development Initiative (SCEDI) is pleased to announce the rollout of its self-funded Alternative Learning and Life Skills Project in Damaturu and Fune Local Government Areas of Yobe State.

In a bold step towards combating learning poverty and improving access to education, SCEDI has successfully concluded a comprehensive training for its first cohort of Community Volunteer Learning Facilitators. The training focused on the Teaching at the Right Level (TaRL) methodology and key life skills facilitation techniques—equipping the facilitators with practical tools to deliver impactful learning experiences.

These trained community facilitators are now prepared to engage and support 200 out-of-school children across selected communities in the targeted LGAs. Over the course of nine months, the intervention will provide foundational literacy, numeracy, and life skills education, laying a strong groundwork for the children’s educational journey.

At the end of the program, all participating children will be mainstreamed into formal schools within their communities, ensuring a sustainable and inclusive transition to formal education.

SCEDI remains committed to advancing community-led education and lifelong learning opportunities for vulnerable children in Yobe State.
