PRESS RELEASE
Ekondo Efak Inang Socio-Cultural Association has received with deep sadness the tragic news involving students of University of Cross River State who were involved in a fatal accident along the Odukpani – Calabar road on their way from Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, and the unfortunate loss of lives that followed.
We extend our heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families, friends, and the entire university community. The pain of losing young, promising lives under such circumstances is immeasurable. Our thoughts and prayers are with you in this difficult time, and we pray that God grants the departed eternal rest and gives their loved ones the strength to bear this irreplaceable loss.
While we acknowledge the legitimate concerns raised over the state of facilities at the General Hospital located on Mary Slessor Avenue, we strongly condemn in unequivocal terms the destruction of public property that occurred during the protest. The vandalization of the hospital and other public infrastructure only worsens the already fragile condition of essential services meant to serve the people.
Violence and destruction are not acceptable means of expressing grievances. Such actions undermine the very cause being advocated and set back efforts toward achieving meaningful and lasting solutions.
We therefore call on all stakeholders, including government authorities, health administrators, and relevant agencies, to urgently address the concerns raised by the students by improving healthcare infrastructure, ensuring emergency preparedness, and restoring public confidence in our institutions.
At the same time, we urge students and youth groups to embrace peaceful and constructive channels in seeking redress, as dialogue and lawful engagement remain the most effective paths to sustainable change.
Once again, we mourn with the affected families and stand in solidarity with the people of Calabar in this moment of grief.
Signed:
Hon. Edem Ene Ironbar
President (Etubom Nka)
