It’s almost a month since we enrolled 30 out of school young girls into the BuildHER Project to acquire practical entrepreneurship and vocational skills in Bekwarra Local Government Area of Cross River State.

The inception activity for this project held on July 21st with a 1-day Leadership and Life Skills Training. The girls were taught on how to set goals and make decisions for themselves, how to lead and communicate with confidence. We also talked about customer relations, marketing, digital business tools, and even personal hygiene, because building a girl means paying attention to every part of her life.

Almost a month in, we're already seeing the shift and watching their growth so far has been beautiful and satisfying. These girls are walking taller, speaking up more, and starting to see themselves as the entrepreneurs and leaders they're becoming.

Highlights from the Capacity Building Workshop on Ending Child Marriage & Harmful Traditional Practices in Bekwarra LGA, Cross River State.

During the workshop, participants engaged in practical and insightful sessions led by experienced and professional experts, covering four key areas:

1️⃣ Understanding Child Marriage and Other Harmful Traditional Practices: Root causes, human rights implications, and effective prevention strategies.

2️⃣ Legal Frameworks for Prevention: Exploring the Violence Against Persons (Prohibition) Act, the Child Rights Act, and the responsibilities of communities in protecting children and adolescents.

3️⃣ The Health, Psychosocial, and Socioeconomic Consequences: Examining how child marriage and harmful traditional practices affect individuals, families, and entire communities.

4️⃣ The Role of Community Stakeholders: Strengthening the capacity of traditional, religious, women, and youth leaders to protect adolescents, prevent harmful practices, and improve referral and response mechanisms.

Together, we are building communities that choose protection over silence, rights over harmful norms, and opportunity over child marriage.

On 20th July 2026, Bagori Care Foundation (BCAF) organized a stakeholders training workshop for over 50+ community leaders, traditional rulers, religious leaders, and youth representatives across the identified wards in Bekwarra Local Government Area, Cross River State, aimed at strengthening community efforts to combat child marriage and other harmful traditional practices.
The training focused on raising awareness, deepening legal understanding, and promoting collective action for the protection of adolescent girls and women.

Participants explored the root causes behind child marriage and other harmful practices, and had honest conversations about the human rights implications and what real prevention looks like on the ground. We also unpacked the legal framework protecting our girls, including the Violence Against Persons Prohibition Act and the Child Rights Act, and talked about what enforcement and compliance actually require from communities like ours.

It was important for us to go beyond the surface. So we had a session on health, psychosocial, and socioeconomic toll these practices take, not just on the girls involved, but on families and entire communities. And because change starts with the people closest to the problem, we placed strong emphasis on the role stakeholders play in protecting adolescents, preventing harm before it happens, and strengthening how our communities respond when a girl needs help.

Through interactive sessions, real discussions, and case studies, everyone in the room had a chance to engage, ask questions, and share their own experiences. By the end of the day, our stakeholders walked away with a deeper understanding of the effects of child marriage, practical prevention approaches, and a clearer grasp of the laws that exist to protect our girls, and how to put them to work at the community level. #
