MORAL INSTRUCTIONS FROM THE TWO HOLY SCRIPTURES - THE BIBLE AND THE QUR'AN
The two holy scriptures contain numerous passages that instruct against behaviours deemed destructive to spiritual growth, moral integrity, and relationships. They emphasize holiness, moderation, and honouring God with both the body and the mind.
MODESTY FOR BOTH MEN AND WOMEN - WHAT THE QUR'AN SAYS
Before dictating dress, the Qur'an establishes a baseline of modesty for both genders, known as the "hijab of the eyes."
On men, God says: "Tell the believing men to reduce [some] of their vision and guard their private parts. That is purer for them. Indeed, Allah is Acquainted with what they do" Qur'an 24:30
And about women, God says: "And tell the believing women to reduce [some] of their vision and guard their private parts and not expose their adornment except that which [necessarily] appears thereof..." Qur'an 24:31.
MODESTY FOR BOTH MEN AND WOMEN - WHAT THE BIBLE SAYS
The Bible emphasizes that outward appearance should reflect an inner holiness, modesty, and reverence for God. Jesus peace be upon him elevated the concept of morality. He taught that sin begins internally in a person's thoughts and desires, not just in their physical actions. Jesus peace be upon him said: But i tell you that anyone who looks at a woman to lust after her has already committed adultery with her in his heart". Matthew 5:28.
In 1Timothy 2:9, God instructs women (and by extension, men) to dress in "modest apparel, with propriety and moderation".
1Peter 3:3-4 also instructs that beauty should not be just external - braiding hair or wearing gold - but rather the "hidden person of the heart" with a gentle and quiet spirit.
Any dressing that is designed to entice lust or expose the body is considered immodest and contrary to biblical teachings. In Deuteronomy 22:5, God speaks against cross-dressing, highlighting the importance of respecting God-given gender distinctions.
INSTRUCTION AGAINST SEXUAL IMMORALITY - WHAT THE BIBLE SAYS
The Bible explicitly prohibits adultery, defining it as a serious sin that destroys lives and families. God commands in the book of Exodus 20:14, that "Thou shalt not commit adultery"
Jesus expanded this to include the intent of the heart, stating that looking at someone lustfully is equivalent to adultery in the heart in Matthew 5:27-28.
In the book of Proverbs 6:32, God warns that: "a man who commits adultery has no sense; whoever does so destroys himself". Then the Bible encourages believers to "flee from sexual immorality" in 1Corinthians 6:18.
INSTRUCTION AGAINST SEXUAL IMMORALITY - WHAT THE QUR'AN SAYS
In Islam, sexual immorality is termed Zina - both adultery and fornication. God has strictly prohibited it, made it a major sin, and described it as a shameful indecency that ruins individuals and society.
Allah commands the believers to not even "approach" unlawful sexual in*******se, recognizing that proximity to sin leads to moral decay. Allah says:
"And do not approach unlawful sexual in*******se. Indeed, it is ever an immorality and is evil as a way." β Surah Al-Isra 17:32
In Sahih al-Bukhari: prophet Muhammad peace be upon him said: "The adultery of the eyes is the sight (gazing at forbidden things), the adultery of the tongue is the talk, and the inner self wishes and desires, and the private parts testify to all that or deny it." then he urged immediate repentance and seeking forgiveness.
Both men and women are commanded to lower their gaze and guard their private parts. In addition, women are instructed to cover their bosoms and not display their charms and ornaments, except to immediate family.
WINE AND DRUNKENNESS - WHAT THE BIBLE SAYS
The Bible strongly condemns wine, drunkenness and addiction. God said "Do not get drunk on wine, which leads to debauchery" Ephesians 5:18.
In the book of Proverbs 20:1, God describes wine as a "mocker" and intoxicating drinks as "brawlers" (meaning it leads to fight and opens doors to many evils).
Again the Bible said: Those who are addicted or drunkards are listed among those who will not inherit the kingdom of God, read 1Corinthians 6:10 and the book of Galatians 5:21.
In the book of Proverbs 23:31, God warns not to look at wine or get mesmerized at it when it is red/sparkling in the cup, to avoid addiction. In Luke 21:34, Jesus peace be upon him gave a strong warning against wine drinking.
WINE AND DRUNKENNESS - WHAT THE QUR'AN SAYS
In the Qur'an, Allah issued a total ban, commanding Muslims to completely "shun" intoxicants. The Qur'an explicitly classifies alcohol as an abomination and a tool of Satan meant to cause hatred, violence, and neglect of religious duties.
Then Allah says: "O you who have believed, indeed, intoxicants, gambling, [sacrificing on] stone altars [to other than Allah], and divining arrows are but defilement from the work of Satan, so avoid it that you may be successful. Satan only wants to cause between you animosity and hatred through intoxicants and gambling and to avert you from the remembrance of Allah and from prayer. So will you not desist?"
Prophet Muhammad peace be upon him strictly forbade wine and all forms of intoxicants, calling them the "key to all evils" he said: Every intoxicant is khamr, and every intoxicant is forbidden." He also said that if a large amount of a substance intoxicates, a small amount is also forbidden.
