Peaceful Protest by CRC Bori-Zone Against Illegal Roadblocks and Extortion on the Saakpewan Axis of the East-West Road

On March 25, 2025, CRC Bori-Zone, alongside some of our members, embarked on a peaceful protest to the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) Saakpewan Tai Command. Our aim was to deliver a formal complaint regarding the illegal roadblocks and extortion of money from motorists along the Bori-Saakpenwa axis of the East-West Road.

Over time, officers from the FRSC Tai Zone, in collaboration with officers from the Tai Police Division and Tai Community Police, have been involved in extorting money from motorists traveling along this route. We presented our concerns in a letter delivered to the 2IC of FRSC Saakpewan Tai, Comrade Nkpordee Basil, the Team Lead of CRC Bori-Zone. The 2IC assured us that our complaints would be conveyed to the command and pointed out that the roadblocks at Saakpewan Junction are primarily orchestrated by the Tai Police Division, in partnership with the Tai Community Police.

We emphasized the need for immediate action by FRSC to address this issue of extortion and for all officers to strictly adhere to road safety regulations and professional standards.

Later, we visited the Bori Area Command following their request for a meeting. This was in response to our previous complaint letter regarding the extortion by police officers in Kpor, Tai, and Khana Local Government Areas, which we had submitted on March 21, 2025. During the meeting, the 2IC Area Commander of Bori, CSP Ofonime Udoh, assured us that the command would organize a dialogue with the DPOs from Bori, Kpor, and Tai divisions, alongside CRC members. The command expressed eagerness to partner with us in addressing these issues.

Additionally, Comrade Pretty Lekia raised concerns about unlawful pocket searches of both men and women along Kaa Road. We assured the Area Command of our commitment to collaborating and preventing further human rights violations in the area.

CRC Bori-Zone remains steadfast in advocating for the protection of human rights and ensuring the safety and dignity of all citizens.
