Theme: The Girl Child: A Vision for the Future

The Sahel Initiative for Gender Equality and Development (SIGED) proudly joins the global community in celebrating girls everywhere on the occasion of the International Day of the Girl Child 2026.

Today is more than a celebration. It is a call to action a reminder that every girl deserves to live with dignity, enjoy her fundamental rights, access quality education and healthcare, and grow up in a safe and supportive environment.

THE CHALLENGES GIRLS FACE

Across many communities, girls continue to face serious challenges, including child marriage, sexual and gender-based violence, human trafficking, discrimination, child labour, teenage pregnancy, harmful traditional practices and limited access to education and healthcare.

Poverty and societal inequalities further expose many girls to abuse, exploitation and neglect.

These challenges must not be ignored. Every girl deserves protection, justice and the opportunity to build a better future.

INVESTING IN GIRLS IS INVESTING IN THE FUTURE

The girl child is a foundation of a progressive and prosperous society.

When we invest in girls' education, health, empowerment and protection, we strengthen families, reduce poverty, promote economic development and build peaceful, inclusive communities.

Every girl deserves the freedom to dream, learn, lead, make informed decisions and fulfil her potential.

SIGED CALLS FOR COLLECTIVE ACTION

We call on governments, parents, community leaders, civil society organisations and all stakeholders to stand together against every form of girl-child abuse.

Let us challenge harmful practices, promote equal opportunities, protect girls' rights and create an environment where every girl can thrive without fear, discrimination or exploitation.

LET HER DREAM.
LET HER LEARN.
LET HER LEAD.

A girl's future should never be limited by violence, discrimination or circumstances beyond her control. Every

INCIDENT REPORT ON ALLEGED DEFILEMENT OF AN 8-YEAR-OLD MINOR IN FANA COMMUNITY, DANDI LGA

Date: Wednesday, 23rd September, 2026

Today, the Technical Working Group on Gender-Based Violence (TWG on GBV), through its Gender Officer in Kamba, Abbas Sa’adu, received a report from Fana Community, Dandi Local Government Area, concerning the alleged defilement of an 8-year-old minor by a 38-year-old man.

The matter was reported by the survivor’s parents to the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Kamba, where the necessary information was obtained. The survivor was subsequently taken to Mai Talle Tara SARC, Kalgo, for medical examination and documentation, including the issuance of a medical report.

The NSCDC thereafter proceeded with the alleged perpetrator to the NSCDC Kebbi State Command for detention and further legal procedures. However, upon arrival, the suspect reportedly complained of ill health, and the officers declined to detain him until he was medically examined. The suggestion that the survivor’s parents should bear the medical expenses was rejected by TWG on GBV members, as such responsibility should not be imposed on the survivor’s family.

Following discussions to resolve the matter, the Honourable Commissioner for Youth and Sports Alh. Nura Fingilla graciously took responsibility for the medical expenses, particularly as no relative of the suspect was available. Medical examination subsequently established that there was no serious medical condition. The NSCDC officers assured the TWG on GBV that the suspect would be presented before the appropriate court tomorrow morning for further legal proceedings.

The TWG on GBV respectfully advises the NSCDC Kebbi State Command to make appropriate use of its medical unit/health facility for the preliminary examination of suspects who report minor health complaints, This will help to save time and resources and ensure that cases involving vulnerable survivors are not unnecessarily delayed.

Intervening Organisation: Technical Working Group on Gender-Based Violence (TWG on GBV), Kebbi State

On 6 September 2026, the Technical Working Group on Gender-Based Violence (TWG on GBV), Kebbi State, received a complaint from one of its members, Comrade Catherine Obeha, Executive Director, Keene Tansi for Women and Children Development Initiatives, concerning a female survivor admitted at Sir Yahaya Memorial Hospital with serious medical complications.

The TWG on GBV immediately intervened and engaged the family through counselling and dialogue, with the involvement of relevant traditional and religious leaders. Following extensive engagement and sensitisation, the father-in-law and husband agreed to allow the recommended blood transfusion, enabling the survivor to receive the required medical intervention.

Conclusion:
The incident highlights the urgent need for continued community sensitisation on women's and children's right to healthcare and the importance of addressing harmful misconceptions that may endanger lives. Stakeholders must remain vigilant and strengthen referral, advocacy, and emergency intervention mechanisms to prevent avoidable loss of life.
