WORLD SICKLE CELL DISEASE DAY 2026
The Association of Resident Doctors (ARD), ATBUTH Bauchi, ably led by Dr. Salisu Muhammad Mukhtar, joins the global community in commemorating World Sickle Cell Disease Day 2026, a day dedicated to raising awareness, promoting understanding, and supporting individuals and families affected by Sickle Cell Disease (SCD).
Sickle Cell Disease remains a major public health challenge, particularly in Nigeria, where many individuals continue to bear the physical, emotional, and socioeconomic burdens associated with the condition. Nevertheless, through increased awareness, early diagnosis, improved access to quality healthcare, and informed marital decisions, we can significantly reduce the impact of the disease on our communities.
This year’s theme, “Together for Sickle Cell Disease: Unite, Understand, and Support,” serves as a powerful reminder that addressing SCD is a shared responsibility. It calls on healthcare professionals, policymakers, community leaders, families, and the general public to work together in fostering a more supportive and inclusive environment for those living with the disease.
As we commemorate this important day, let us continue to promote genotype awareness, encourage newborn and early screening, support research initiatives, and advocate for policies that improve the quality of life of individuals living with Sickle Cell Disease.
Together, we can build a future where every person affected by SCD has the opportunity to live a healthier, fuller, and more productive life.
