ATBU Students’ Union Seeks Partnership With Bala Wunti Support Organisation On Campus Development And Student Empowerment

BAUCHI - In a move that signifies the growing collaboration between student leadership and community development organisations, the Students’ Union Government (SUG) of Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University (ATBU), Bauchi, has sought a strategic partnership with the Bala Wunti Support Organisation (BWSO) to address critical infrastructural and developmental needs affecting students at the institution.

The engagement reflects a shared commitment to youth empowerment, educational advancement, leadership development, and the creation of an enabling environment for learning and innovation. It also aligns with the broader vision of the Bala Wunti Support Organisation, which has continued to champion initiatives aimed at empowering young people, strengthening educational institutions, promoting digital inclusion, and supporting community development across Bauchi State.

The Students’ Union delegation, led by the President of the Students’ Union Government, Comrade Sharrif Abdulmalik Toro, represented by Comrade Umar Adamu Akuyam, paid a courtesy visit to the Chief Executive Officer of the Bala Wunti Support Organisation, Architect Muktar Jarmajo, to formally present a number of requests considered vital to improving student welfare and enhancing the educational experience at the university.

During the visit, the student leaders commended BWSO for its numerous interventions in education, youth development, entrepreneurship, digital literacy, and community service across Bauchi State. They particularly acknowledged the organisation’s reputation as a youth-focused platform dedicated to building future leaders and creating opportunities for young people to contribute meaningfully to societal development.

The delegation outlined several priority projects and programmes requiring support, particularly within the Gubi Campus of the university. These included the installation of additional solar-powered security lights to improve safety and security across the campus, the provision of solar-powered boreholes to address water supply challenges, sponsorship of a Students’ Entrepreneurship Summit aimed at equipping students with practical business and innovation skills, support for the completion of the Students’ Union Government Secretariat, and sponsorship of the Students’ Union Quiz Competition designed to promote academic excellence among students.

According to the student representatives, the proposed interventions would not only improve campus infrastructure but would also contribute significantly to student development, leadership growth, entrepreneurial capacity building, and the overall academic environment of the institution.

Responding on behalf of the Chief Executive Officer, Malam Muktar Jarmajo, the Chief Operating Officer of the Bala Wunti Support Organisation, Alhaji Ladan Salihu Kangere, welcomed the delegation and commended the Students’ Union leadership for demonstrating responsible leadership through constructive engagement and advocacy on behalf of students.

He noted that BWSO remains committed to supporting initiatives that advance education, youth empowerment, leadership development, entrepreneurship, and community service. He explained, however, that the organisation receives numerous requests from educational institutions, community groups, vulnerable populations, and other stakeholders across Bauchi State, necessitating a careful process of needs assessment and prioritisation.

Alhaji Kangere therefore advised the Students’ Union Government to prepare and submit a detailed written proposal highlighting its most urgent and impactful requests. He explained that such a submission would enable the organisation to properly evaluate the proposals and determine feasible areas of support in line with its available resources and strategic priorities.

He further reiterated that the Bala Wunti Support Organisation was founded with a clear mission of uniting young people under one umbrella for capacity development, community service, and civic leadership. He added that the organisation’s vision is to become the foremost platform for youth leadership development, mentorship, talent nurturing, and succession planning in Bauchi State.

According to him, sustainable development can only be achieved when investments are made in education, youth empowerment, and leadership development, stressing that young people remain the greatest asset for the future growth and prosperity of the state.

The meeting ended on a positive note, with both parties expressing optimism about future collaboration and reaffirming their commitment to initiatives that promote educational excellence, youth empowerment, innovation, and sustainable development in Bauchi State.

The Emir gave the commendation on Friday while speaking at the Youth and Future of Democracy Summit 1.0, organised by BWSO at Federal College of Education Jama'are.

Represented by the Maidalan Jama'are, Alh Ibrahim Maidala, the Emir noted that BWSO's deliberate strategy of engaging women and youths as key drivers of development aligns with the principles of democratic governance, inclusiveness, and sustainable community progress.

According to him, the organisation has continued to demonstrate a strong commitment to empowering grassroots communities by creating platforms that encourage civic participation, leadership development, and social responsibility among young people and women.

He further observed that BWSO remains a vibrant organisation dedicated to strategic planning and impactful interventions aimed at reversing the trend of underdevelopment in Bauchi State.

The emir urged stakeholders, community leaders and development partners to support initiatives that promote human capital development and strengthen democratic values at the grassroots level.

Earlier, while delivering a presentation on the theme, "26 Years of Democracy: Renewing Our Commitment to National Development," Hon. Adamu Tijjani Jama'are challenged participants to actively contribute to changing the developmental narrative of Bauchi State through responsible citizenship, innovation and community service.

He emphasised that democracy can only thrive when citizens, particularly young people, move beyond political participation during elections and become actively involved in governance, accountability, and nation-building throughout the year.

According to him, the future of Nigeria depends largely on the ability of its youth population to embrace leadership, entrepreneurship, education and civic engagement.

Hon. Jama'are further called on government institutions, civil society organisations and the private sector to invest more in youth development programmes that create opportunities for skills acquisition, employment, and social inclusion.

He stressed that empowering young people remains one of the most effective ways of consolidating democratic gains and promoting sustainable national development.

Responding, the Chief Executive Officer of BWSO, Malam Mukhtar Ahmed Jarmajo, assured participants that the organisation would continue to deepen its community service initiatives and strengthen youth and women engagement programmes across Bauchi State.

The Chief Executive Officer who was represented by the State Coordinator, Hon Sha'abdin Bello Zalanga, explained that BWSO was established on the belief that meaningful development begins at the grassroots, adding that the organisation would continue to design and implement programmes that address the socio-economic challenges facing communities while promoting self-reliance and active citizenship.

Malam Jarmajo also reaffirmed the organisation's commitment to partnering with traditional institutions, government agencies, educational institutions and development organisations to expand opportunities for young people and women.

He noted that collaboration remains essential for achieving lasting development outcomes and building stronger, more resilient communities.

According to him, the success of the Youth and Future of Democracy Summit reflects the growing desire among young Nigerians to participate constructively in shaping the future of their communities and the nation.

He pledged that BWSO would sustain such platforms to encourage dialogue, mentorship, leadership development, and community-driven solutions.

The event attracted participants from across Jama'are, including students, youth groups, women leaders, community stakeholders, and civil society representatives. Activities featured lecture presentations, interactive panel discussions, and engagements focused on strengthening democratic values, youth participation and community development.

Democracy Day: Honour The Sacrifices of June 12 Heroes, Empower Youth for Nigeria's Future — Bala Wunti
..Calls for Dialogue, Political Tolerance and Issue-Based Politics Ahead of 2027 Elections

As Nigerians commemorate the 2026 Democracy Day, a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), philanthropist, and advocate of good governance, Dr. Bala Maijama'a Wunti, has called on citizens to reflect on the ideals, sacrifices, and resilience of the heroes and heroines who fought for the restoration, nurturing, and consolidation of democratic rule in Nigeria.

Dr. Wunti made the call in a Democracy Day message released through the Chief Communication Officer of the Bala Wunti Support Organisation, Abubakar Al-Sadique.

According to the APC chieftain, June 12 remains a defining symbol of the Nigerian people's resilience, courage, and determination to enthrone democratic governance and safeguard the fundamental rights and freedoms of citizens.

"As we commemorate this year's Democracy Day, Nigerians should take time to reflect on the ideals and sacrifices of all those who worked tirelessly for the restoration, nurturing, and entrenchment of democracy in our country. Their courage, patriotism, and unquestionable belief in a better Nigeria laid the foundation for the democratic system we enjoy today. Their sacrifices must never be forgotten, and their legacy and agitation for good governance and transparency should continue to inspire us to build a stronger, more united nation," Dr. Wunti stated.

While acknowledging the imperfections and challenges confronting the country, Dr. Wunti urged Nigerians to remain steadfast, patient, and supportive of government efforts aimed at strengthening democratic institutions, promoting accountability, and delivering sustainable development.

Bala Wunti noted that democracy remains a work in progress and requires the collective commitment of citizens and leaders alike to achieve its full potential.

Looking ahead to the 2027 general elections, the APC stalwart called on political actors, parties, and their supporters to reject violence, intolerance, and divisive politics, stressing that national development can only thrive in an atmosphere of peace and constructive engagement.

"The future of our democracy depends on our willingness to embrace dialogue, respect differing opinions, and place national interest above personal or political ambitions. Political actors must shun violence and inflammatory rhetoric and instead focus on issue-based campaigns that offer practical solutions to the challenges facing our people," he said.

Dr. Wunti further emphasized the critical role of young people in shaping Nigeria's democratic future, urging political leaders and institutions to create pathways for greater youth participation in governance and decision-making processes.

"We must deliberately prioritise youth involvement in political and governance processes. Young people are not merely the leaders of tomorrow; they are indispensable stakeholders in today's democratic journey. By creating opportunities for their meaningful participation, we will nurture competent, visionary, and responsible future leaders capable of driving Nigeria's progress and strengthening our democratic institutions for generations to come," he added.

He also called on leaders at all levels to uphold the values of inclusiveness, transparency, accountability, and good governance, noting that these principles remain essential for fostering national unity, stability, and prosperity.

Dr. Wunti concluded by urging Nigerians to draw inspiration from the spirit of June 12 by promoting peaceful coexistence, civic responsibility, and active participation in the democratic process.

"The true essence of June 12 lies not only in remembrance but in our collective resolve to preserve and deepen democracy. Let us continue to work together to build a Nigeria where justice, opportunity, and good governance prevail for all," Wunti said.
