Bauchi State House of Assembly has passed for second reading a bill seeking to establish the Bauchi State Disability Commission and ensure greater protection for persons with disabilities in the state.

Leading the debate on the bill during plenary presided over by the Speaker, Dr. Abubakar Y. Suleiman, the sponsor of the bill, Hon. Barr. Habibu Umar, representing Kirfi Constituency, explained that the private memberโ€™s bill seeks to repeal and re-enact the existing law establishing the Bauchi State Agency for Persons with Disability enacted in 2010.

He said the existing legislation is inadequate to address current realities and challenges faced by persons with disabilities, stressing that the proposed law aims to strengthen and expand the legal framework to promote inclusivity and ensure better protection of their rights.

Hon. Habibu Umar therefore appealed to his colleagues to support the bill, describing it as a step towards improving the welfare and opportunities of persons with disabilities in Bauchi State.

In his ruling, Speaker Abubakar Y. Suleiman referred the bill to the House Committee on Humanitarian Affairs for further legislative action.

PRESS RELEASE: INCLUSIVE EMPLOYMENT FOR BLIND GRADUATES IN BAUCHI
STATE
To: The Honourable Members of the National Assembly from Bauchi State and the Bauchi State Government
The Office of the Youth Leader, Nigerian Association of the Blind, Bauchi State Chapter, is calling on the national assembly members from Bauchi state government, and stakeholders to prioritize the employment and inclusion of blind graduates in Bauchi State. Despite their qualifications and capabilities, blind individuals face significant challenges in securing employment, perpetuating social exclusion and stigma.
As we move forward, we urge those in electoral positions to consider persons with disabilities in their appointments, promoting equal access and opportunities. This includes inclusive education, and employment opportunities.
We request that the government and relevant stakeholders take immediate action to address the unemployment crisis facing blind graduates in Bauchi State. This can be achieved through initiatives such as job training programs, mentorship schemes, and inclusive hiring practices.
We believe that everyone deserves equal opportunities, regardless of their abilities. Let us work together to create a more inclusive society.
Key Demands:
- Inclusive Employment Practices: We call on the government and private sector to implement inclusive hiring practices, providing equal opportunities for blind graduates.
Accessible Education: We demand accessible education for blind students, including Braille materials, audio descriptions, and sign language interpretation.
Consider Persons with Disabilities in Scholarship: Ensure that scholarship programs are inclusive and accessible to persons with disabilities.
- Appointing Persons with Disabilities to Head to office of Special Adviser (SA) disability matters and legislative aid on disability matters.

*Today, we join the world to raise awareness about leprosy, also known as Hansen's Disease, a curable condition that has been stigmatized for centuries.

Leprosy is not a curse; itโ€™s a medical condition caused by a bacterial infection. The disease affects the skin, the peripheral nerves, the mucosa of the upper respiratory tract and the eyes.
With early detection and appropriate treatment, it can be completely cured. However, the stigma and social exclusion faced by those affected often have a more lasting impact than the disease itself.

This day calls for awareness, compassion and inclusion for those affected.*

At the International Disability Alliance, we are conducting a focused survey to learn about the experiences of women with disabilities in health care.

We want to know how women with disabilities experience health services and if they are involved in health planning and decisions.

Your answers will help us write a report to make health care fair and accessible for women with disabilities and help advocate for their inclusion in decision making around health policy.

The survey is in English, Arabic, French, Spanish. The iData platform also enables accessing the questions in International Sign and easy to read. The survey should take about 10 minutes to complete.

This current survey is only to collect responses from women with disabilities. If you do not identify as a woman with disability, please forward this to the women with disabilities that you know!

Take the survey here: https://idata.tools/survey/-OCmEzzwJD6et4XtmoII

Please fill out the survey and share it with other women with disabilities. The more answers we get, the better. It will be open till the end of January.

For any further questions please contact Gayatri Sekar [email protected]

Thank you for helping us collect this important information!

iData is the platform of the International Disability Alliance to create, launch and analyse data collected through the use of online accessible surveys
