Welcome to 2026 - A Year of Impact, Resilience and Transformation

Season’s greetings from Rosana Empowerment Foundation (REF)!

On behalf of our management, staff, volunteers, partners, and beneficiaries, I extend a warm welcome to every member of the REF family as we officially resume full operational activities for 2026.

This new year presents a renewed opportunity to deepen our commitment to empowering women, girls, youths, persons with disabilities, and vulnerable households through impactful programmes, advocacy, and sustainable development interventions.

As we step into 2026, we do so with clarity, purpose, and conviction. The development space in Nigeria, and across Africa, continues to evolve in demanding ways: shifting regulatory frameworks, dwindling development financing, rising cost of living, social inequalities, and distressing challenges such as unemployment, gender-based violence, weak education outcomes, and deteriorating community health systems.

These realities present both a call to action and a responsibility. For REF, they reinforce the urgency of:

Beyond Passion: Strategic Communication as the Lifeline of Sustainable Impact

Across the history of global development work, one truth has remained constant: good work alone does not guarantee funding. Nonprofits around the world, from Oxfam’s post-war humanitarian efforts to the formation of GlobalGiving’s digital grant ecosystem, have learned that impact only matters when it is consistently communicated, evidenced, and reinforced. For Rosana Empowerment Foundation (REF), this lesson is both urgent and empowering.

While REF is driven by compassion, service, and community transformation, donors do not fund passion alone. They fund clarity, of mission, plans, and intended results. They invest in organizations that demonstrate structure, accountability, and the confidence to deliver on promises. How an organization tells its story signals how it operates internally. When REF communicates clearly, it shows readiness, discipline, and capability.

In today’s digital era, organizations often mistake visibility for influence. Yet visibility without strategy creates only noise. Posting regularly is not the same as communicating effectively. What turns activity into credibility is strategy, knowing the audience, defining goals, and aligning messages with measurable results. The NGOs that have secured long-term sustainability are those that speak with purpose, not frequency.

Similarly, impact stories demand systems, not moments. A single testimony of a life changed is powerful, but donors need patterns, consistency, and proof over time. Organizations like UNICEF and Save the Children evolved from moment-driven charity to systematic evidence-based storytelling. REF must also document progress, trace outcomes, and demonstrate cumulative change. Consistency is what transforms hope into trust.

Finally, communication and fundraising are not separate processes, they are partners in sustaining impact. Communication invites belief. Fundraising fuels delivery. When both work in harmony, organizations grow stronger, communities benefit, and long-term change becomes possible.

REF stands among the next generation of African-led organizations shaping solutions for women, youth, and vulnerable communities. By telling its story boldly, transparently, and strategically, REF does more than attract resources, it builds a movement rooted in dignity, empowerment, and shared humanity.

The Historical Roots and Rising Threat of Technology-Facilitated Gender-Based Violence

Technology-Facilitated Gender-Based Violence (TFGBV) is not a new phenomenon, it is an evolving form of a very old problem. Historically, gender-based violence has adapted alongside society’s communication tools.

As early as the late 1990s, when the internet became accessible to the public, women’s rights organizations began documenting cases of online stalking, cyber harassment, and non-consensual image sharing.

One of the earliest widely publicized cases occurred in 1998, when American college student Brock Thompson’s misuse of online message boards exposed women to targeted harassment, marking a turning point in recognizing digital violence as a serious threat.

By the early 2000s, the rise of social media magnified this problem, enabling abusers to target women at scale and with anonymity.

Today, validated global statistics show that 1.8 billion women and girls still lack legal protection from online harassment, exposing them daily to threats, cyberstalking, hate speech, sexual exploitation, doxxing, and digital blackmail.

This staggering number reflects not only inadequate legal frameworks, but also historical failures to treat digital rights as fundamental human rights.

Research by UN Women shows that women, especially activists, journalists, human rights defenders, and young girls, are disproportionately targeted, often silenced, and sometimes driven away from digital platforms entirely.

TFGBV is real, and it is rising. As technology becomes deeply woven into work, education, governance, and social interaction, the violence women face is increasingly expanding into these spaces. The harm is not merely virtual, its psychological, economic, and physical consequences are devastating.

Survivors often experience anxiety, depression, isolation, reputational damage, and in extreme cases, offline violence triggered by online threats.

The historical pattern is clear: whenever society advances, gender-based violence adapts. But so can our response.

Speak up. Support survivors. Demand safer digital spaces. Digital rights are human rights, and ensuring safety online is essential for achieving gender equality.

The Historical Burden of Prostate Cancer and the Urgent Call for Routine Screening Among Men

For decades, prostate cancer has remained one of the most significant yet under-discussed health threats facing men worldwide.

Historically, the disease gained medical attention as far back as the 19th century, when surgeons like John Adams documented prostate tumors in the 1850s.

However, it wasn’t until the late 20th century, particularly the introduction of the Prostate-Specific Antigen (PSA) test in 1986, that early detection became possible.

This breakthrough dramatically transformed outcomes: survival rates improved because men who otherwise showed no symptoms were finally being diagnosed early.

Despite this progress, prostate cancer continues to claim hundreds of thousands of lives globally each year, largely because many men still present late.

The disease is notoriously silent in its early stages; historically, most diagnoses before the PSA era occurred only after the cancer had progressed, causing urinary complications, bone pain, or other severe symptoms.

Medical records from the mid-1900s consistently show that late detection resulted in poor prognoses, a pattern that persists today where screening is not routinely practiced.

Modern research further reveals that African and African-descendant men, such as those in Nigeria and across West Africa, face a disproportionately higher risk and more aggressive forms of the disease.

This historical and epidemiological evidence underscores one truth: routine screening saves lives.

Dear men, it only takes a simple PSA blood test and a brief physical exam to detect prostate issues long before symptoms appear.

Early detection remains the most powerful tool in preventing severe outcomes.

Prevention is power, and taking charge of your health is an act of strength, not weakness.

Every man over 40 (or earlier for those with a family history) should normalize yearly check-ups.

Routine screening is not merely a medical recommendation; it is a lifesaving habit.

Let us break the silence, confront the history, and change the narrative by prioritising our health.

Schedule that check-up. Encourage another man. Make it a culture.

Men: Our Superheroes - Breaking the “Men Don’t Cry” Lie

Across cultures and centuries, men have been cast as protectors, providers, and paragons of strength. History calls this the “stiff upper lip,” a Victorian and early twentieth-century ideal sharpened by industrialization and wartime expectations that praised stoicism and shamed visible pain.

That cultural script hardened into the modern myth: men must not cry. Yet both Scripture and lived experience tell a different truth.

The Bible models compassion and emotional honesty. When Jesus faced the grief of Lazarus, “Jesus wept” (John 11:35), showing that sorrow is human, not unmanly.

Psalm 34:18 reminds us that “the Lord is close to the brokenhearted,” and Galatians 6:2 calls us to “carry each other’s burdens.”

These passages validate grief and invite communal care rather than isolation.

At a recent CSO dialogue, we named this a lie, and resolved to encourage emotional openness. I’ll share an anonymous example: a respected community leader, admired for steady hands and calm counsel, privately battled depression after losing his business. For months he masked despair behind optimism.

A trusted friend finally invited him into honest, judgment-free conversation. The friend listened, acknowledged the pain, prayed with him, and helped him seek counseling. That single act of candid, compassionate presence began dismantling shame and restoring hope.

What evidence and faith together teach us is simple: vulnerability is not weakness; it is the first step toward resilience.

Practical advice:

- Create spaces where men can speak without fear: men’s groups, faith circles, workplace peer-support systems.

- Normalize emotion by encouraging leaders to model honest feeling.

- Link men to professional help when needed.

- Use Scripture and prayer to hold suffering with compassion and wisdom.

- Teach young boys that tears are human and not a failure of masculinity.

We are better when we share.

Let us call men what they truly are: brave enough to feel, courageous enough to ask for help, and indeed our superheroes, whole, wounded, and beloved.

🌍 REF Joins Gender Transformative Health Training in Jos! 🌿💪

Rosana Empowerment Foundation (REF) was proud to participate in a 2-Day Training for Community-Based and Women-Led Organizations organized by Better Life Restoration Initiative (BERI) with support from The Global Fund, held in Jos, Plateau State.

The training, chaired by Mr. Nkem Ogbonna, BERI’s Programme Officer, focused on strengthening our capacity to design, deliver, and advocate for gender-transformative and gender-affirmative health interventions, especially in HIV, TB, and Malaria.

From Beneficiaries to Participants - Restoring Dignity and Shared Responsibility

The term “beneficiary”, derived from the Latin BENEFICIUM meaning “a favor or gift,” entered the English lexicon in the early 17th century to describe one who receives advantage or profit.

Historically, it was used in legal and charitable contexts, especially in the colonial and missionary eras, to describe those who received aid or relief from institutions or benefactors.

However, as global development evolved after World War II, this term began to carry unintended connotations of dependency and inferiority.

Over time, BENEFICIARY came to imply a one-sided relationship: the giver as powerful and the receiver as helpless.

This imbalance echoes a form of “colonial charity”, where the receiver is often seen as an object of pity rather than a partner in progress.

Historically, African and Asian development narratives were dominated by Western agencies referring to local people as BENEFICIARIES.

The term subtly excluded them from the decision-making process, even when the projects were meant to serve them. This language, therefore, became a reflection of unequal power dynamics.

In recent decades, humanitarian and faith-based organizations have recognized the need to restore agency and dignity to the people they serve.

The shift from calling people “beneficiaries” to “participants” represents not just a change in terminology but a transformation in philosophy. It aligns with the Biblical understanding that all humans are co-laborers with God (1 Corinthians 3:9), sharing responsibility in creation and restoration.

The Bible teaches that even when one receives help, it should be with dignity and purpose.

In Acts 20:35, Paul reminds believers that “it is more blessed to give than to receive,” yet the receiver, too, plays a role in stewardship, multiplying what is given, as seen in the Parable of the Talents (Matthew 25:14–30).

Jesus Himself treated those He helped not as mere recipients but as participants in their transformation - “Rise, take up thy bed, and walk” (John 5:8).

Thus, calling people PARTICIPANTS rather than BENEFICIARIES restores the sense of ownership, effort, and shared purpose. It reflects the divine principle that empowerment is collaborative, not paternalistic.

In conclusion, as the world moves toward inclusive development, faith-based and humanitarian institutions must lead by example, replacing words that diminish with those that uplift, respect, and involve.

For as Proverbs 18:21 declares, “Death and life are in the power of the tongue.” The words we choose can either reinforce dependency or inspire destiny.
