Gamunan Care and Support Foundation supports response to Diphtheria —pays advocacy to General Hospital Bajoga

Gamunan Care and Support Foundation (GCSF) paid an advocacy visit to General Hospital Bajoga, Funakaye LGA, as part of efforts to support the ongoing response to diphtheria in Gombe State.

The engagement focused on strengthening community-level awareness, promoting timely referral of suspected cases and supporting vaccination uptake among children, with particular attention to children living with HIV and other vulnerable populations.

Through our established PLHIV support groups, peer networks and community structures, GCSF is committed to contributing to the response by:

• Promoting awareness of diphtheria signs, prevention and the importance of seeking care early.
• Encouraging timely referral of suspected cases to appropriate health facilities.
• Mobilising caregivers to ensure children are vaccinated according to the guidance of health authorities.
• Reaching households of children living with HIV with accurate, evidence-based health information.
• Strengthening collaboration between communities and health facilities.

GCSF appreciates the management and health workers of General Hospital Bajoga for the engagement and their continued efforts in responding to diphtheria.

Together, through strong community–facility collaboration, timely referral, vaccination and informed communities, we can help protect children and strengthen the health of our communities.

🇳🇬 HAPPY 66TH INDEPENDENCE DAY, NIGERIA! 🇳🇬

Today, Gamunan Care and Support Foundation joins millions of Nigerians at home and abroad to celebrate 66 years of our nation’s independence. We celebrate our diversity, resilience, unity, and the strength of our people. May Nigeria continue to grow in peace, progress, justice, and prosperity.

We also celebrate 30 years of the creation of Gombe State—our dear “Jewel in the Savannah.” This is a moment to appreciate the people, communities, leaders, and institutions that have contributed to the growth and development of our state. May Gombe continue to experience peace, inclusion, sustainable development, and greater opportunities for all.

AHD MESSAGES :

1. Advanced HIV Disease in children is still persisting because response systems are not proactive enough. Governments must shift from reactive care to early intervention.
2. Every delay in AHD treatment increases the risk of child mortality. Health authorities must ensure immediate, uninterrupted access to care once diagnosis is made.
3. Health systems that cannot detect AHD early are failing children. State Ministries of Health and National HIV Programmes must integrate routine AHD screening and early identification protocols into all HIV service delivery points to ensure children receive timely care.
4. Continuity of care is not optional. Hospital Managements and State Ministries of Health must strengthen patient tracking, follow-up, and retention systems to ensure children living with HIV remain in care without interruption.
5. Weak referral systems are contributing to avoidable child deaths. Hospitals and health facilities must coordinate care more effectively across all levels.
6. Geography should never determine survival. Governments must ensure equitable access to AHD services in both rural and urban communities.
7. Data gaps in HIV programming leave children invisible in the health system. National HIV Programmes, State Ministries of Health, and implementing partners must strengthen data collection, reporting, and monitoring systems to ensure every child at risk of AHD is identified and linked to care.
8. Stigma continues to disrupt care-seeking behavior among children and families. Health systems and laws must actively protect patients from discrimination.
